it might be in our best interest to register names that large companies share (ibm.tv, delta.tv, cw.tv, etc)... and immediately offer the domain to them, at cost, as a way to maximize exposure (ibm corp, delta airlines, cw network) for the .tv tld.

in the long run, i think this will benefit .tv more than having these companies snub at .tv "as JUST another extension" because someone else reg'd "their" name.

thoughts?

If you want to do that (which I don't recommend) just call them and tell them to register their names so there is no chance they think you are cybersquatting

obviously we should not cybersquat and not just because it is bad for extension, but because they will take the name away if they want it...

Yea, it may look like registering in bad faith.

On that note, I am thinking of approaching end users. Are there any pointers on how and how not to approach, assuming there are no TM issues?

Thanks,

GH

I like the idea of registering a domain for a well known company. (with the idea of giving it to them for free or for reg fee of course) It could do wonders for your business to be able to say that you had IBM as a client or other companies of such nature.

I think that this is a really really bad idea...sorry Aaamaretto

I can see where you are coming from (from a "promoting .tv" point of view) but if that is the end goal you are better off writing the company a letter or e-mail and telling them why they should use a .tv for their business. However (1) this is really the .tv corp's job and (2) they'll probably write you off as a nut!

What I would like to see is the .TV Corp shelling out a million dollars to youtube, myspace etc on the condition they use a .tv.

.TV needs exposure, but ultimately it is verisign that has to promote it - on an individual level though you just have to make your names work for you by your own efforts.

no need to apologize, i'm wanting other peoples opinions :)

i read an article dated from 2000 that mentioned something about that (companies seeing new tld's as more of a headache), of course, that was back in the internet 1.0 days.

I agree with Dottv,

I think it would be a thankless task. Either they will not bother with a response - in which case you would be left with a dud reg on your plate - or, they would be interested and slap a C&D letter in your lap....

Even though your intentions are pure AAmaretto, they will receive no recognition IMHO....I certainly do not label your idea as cybersquatting at all though - it is plain, to me at least, that this is not your intention in any way shape or form. And if you would sell at cost - no one could consider this bad faith - be it intentionally or strict liability....

And yes, this should very definately be something that Verisign should be doing - looks like they want to make maximum profits in leiu of a decent ad campaighn;;;;

I have, actually , heard from different sources on the qt, that there are some indications that Verisign will be looking to do something about their current status...but these are just rumours - although they seem to be gathering pace, given the number of different sources "in the know".

Here is an idea to consider though...for those of us that have the time.....imagine if you did decide to do Verisgn's job for them - you target a trademarked name that is still available and is also a company that you would like to advertise on one of your developed .tv's or soon to be developed .Tvs.....you get in touch with the marketing/advertising department - let them know about what the future holds for .TV - explain that there trademarked name is available - and that they consider protecting it.....now if any of these companies believes in what you are advising them to do - and they go ahead and reg their trademark .TV - well, now you have an open channel to the decision makers for the company's advertising budget - I am sure that they will consider your request to spend some advertising bucks with you a little more seriously than just being another person off the street.....
