So I got a response for a domain I'm selling for mid xxx$:
\\\\
I thought about it, but then I realized that normal photographers like myself.... The hardworking small business woman... Are being totally ripped off by you guys.

I should be able to pay a small fee per year, not this ridiculous amount because you bought up all the good names! So no thank you. Go open up a meaningful business that actually helps people.
\\\\\\\\
Well what should I respond to this?

As an end user who has been looking for a good domain for about six months, it can be very annoying for mediocre names to be up for 2k.

But it makes sense and it gave me an interest in domaining. I see the value in a good domain more than ever while beta testing with my own very standard name.

The most annoying part is the domains that are worth a decent investment on my part haven't replied. Like ten of them so far.
For me, personally, it all comes down to communication and how you approach me about giving something up for less than I'm asking. If you're polite, honest and offer me a benefit to letting something go for less, I'm far more likely to work with you. When you come to me with vulgar language like a self-entitled asshole, the price is more likely to go up than down.

When you come to me with language and self-entitlement, like above, the price is more likely to go up- simply because I know you want it and are an asshole.

By "above" you mean the OP's buyer, right?

She can go ahead and get a sweet .PHOTOGRAPHY domain for $15.

I got a similar email last night. Wouldn't be surprised if it's the same person.

If he were as good as a developer as he may think he is, he'd just have to Google the domain and see I was selling it here for $25 with the .NET. Not anymore!

Nothing wrong here, developers are cheap, they possess skills many domainers lack and can take loosy domain into riches by building it up. Best combination of skills is domainer who can do development + marketing.

how do you know it was an end-user, and not just another low-balling scumbag domainer?
She's a photographer (has a decent website) I sent an email and she replied being very interested and also asked if I owned more similar domains.

She's a photographer so she collects all kinds of photos; MostWanted.photo and MostWanted.photos are for sale. Stock.photo and photos was sold for $60k.
She can make an offer if she likes:)

Personally I think her response comes from not understanding - Whenever faced with these sort of situations it's always a good idea to step back and look at it from the other persons perspective as well before responding. She probably see's that domains are $10 or so and now she has to pay $XXX for something that was initially $10.

The way I see it is that you have two options:

1.) Ignore it and move on.

2.) Reply back and say something like you are sorry she feels that way. Whilst she is entitled to her opinion, you would like to shed some light on the amount of work that goes into domaining. Explain to her that domain trading is much like stock trading and investments. You could fork out $1000's on the wrong domain only have to sell it for peanuts because you are unable to find a suitable buyer in time. Tell her that it's not as simple buy low and sell high business model. There are huge risks involved and a considerable amount of time and effort that goes into it. You can add a bit more detail to what domainining invloves and stuff but basically take the high road and in the end appologize for having contacted her and wish her well in her business. Sometimes educating her on the actual effort that goes into domaining COULD change her mind and she might even end up buying the domain after seeing the value in it.

I thought about it.
I realized that the normal consumers like myself, hardworking men and women, are totally ripped off by you, photographers.

I should be able to just hand over my iphone to any bystander and get my photographs free and not pay the ridiculous fees because you bought some cameras and gadgets. Go please open some meaningful and useful business that actually helps the society, people would be just fine with taking selfies.

That was golden :D

I agree; domainers puts lots of time finding right names. Moreover, taking huge risk... Domainers are awesome :)

this is what I replied:

It's important to realize that domain names are not much unlike real estate. As a case in point, it might cost you $1000/month to rent a 250-square-foot space in the Bronx for a brick-and-mortar shop, but it would clearly be unreasonable to expect to rent the equivalent amount of space on Fifth Avenue around Midtown, NYC for a penny under $5K/month. The added cost, of course, accounts for the revenue gained from planting your store in a densely populated location and the prestige of selling on Fifth Avenue. As in any other matter of business, demand determines price.

I hope she'll get a gtld for like $20 first year and when she renews will have to pay $499 or more :D

if she asked about similar domains, while also wanting to pay less for the name you submitted...

then maybe she is domainer, who also is a photographer.

:)

Make sure this end user understands that your fee is not how much the renewal is. Sounds like the photographer thinks it's mid xxx per year...

Not worth a response, you can not change how someone feels about what you do in this industry.

Dear X,

thank you for your current opinion.
If you change your mind you are welcome to contact me again.

Best regards,

Im sure that buyer is the type of person that does that with everything. Probably complains about the prices of everything. ...then pays.

I usually agree with them by saying, "I know, everything in this world is so expensive". " Would you like to proceed or maybe you could try creating your own domain for alot less?". "Personally I am waiting for the price of a Rolls Royce to come down to the price of a Schwinn bicycle." Then laugh and move on.

I'm a developer and would never send an inbound inquiry like this to anyone. One's skill set makes no difference to the value of a domain nor is it an excuse to shoot their mouth off to someone. I do not care what he can or can not potentially do. If they are so good at turning water into wine, .ACCOUNTANT domains are now just $0.88.

;) The 'chinese market psy price tactic' again.

Just a short off toppic remark, I don't want to derail this thread.
