Today I finally decided to be proactive in selling my domains and contact end users directly.
I did a search for all of my names and saw that many of the names were taken in inferior extensions (I hold the .com, they hold the .net/.info, I hold the .in, they hold the .co.in). Obviously, in such a scenario, selling a domain becomes much easier.

First, what I'm scared of is my offer email just going into their bulk mailbox. The subject becomes very important in this case. I'm not asking anybody to give away their secrets, but what kind of subjects usually evade the spam blocking? So far, I've used this: "We're selling xxxx.com" and have heard a couple of replies.

Secondly, should you use the contact info in the Whois of their domain name, or contact them at the "contact us" address given on the website?

Thirdly, if you do get a response which goes like "whats your asking price?", how long do you suppose I should wait before I respond?

And finally - this is more of an appraisal than a question - what should be your asking price for a purely brandable domain (in .com) that you're trying to sell to a .info owner who seems to be a domainer too?


Thats a lot of questions I assume, but ones everybody might want to know the answer to. I've checked out previous threads, but finding the right answer in them becomes more and more muddled as the thread progresses. I learned a lot from the previous threads, and can at least write a good email...

I usually just put xxxx.com in the email subject box. If they have any interest in the name that will usually grab their attention.

If they have a website I trawl around it to see if any contacts are named and then send the email to them with a personal address (eg Dear John or Dear Mr Doe)

I believe in responding promptly to all enquiries as I think this is more businesslike. If they dont like your price they wont buy anyway, however short or long you take to reply.

As for the asking price, if you are selling to a domainer, you will obviuously get less than if you are selling to an end user. Only you can decide what price you are happy to accept.

This will most likely kick start you when selling your names on a proactive basis.

I've gone through that entire thread, but there were certain questions that weren't answered in their entirety in that thread. That's why I made this one.

btw, David. I am a bit naive about this, but what do you mean when you say that you "trawl" their website for contacts? Is there any tool for doing this?
So by that, you mean that sending emails to the Whois contact address won't get me anywhere?

If their not domainers, I would think that they're whois email will be forgotten, or rarely checked. Find an email that they've put into place for contacting them.

I dont use any tools - I just explore the site to see if any specific contacts are named, and if they seem appropriate I email them.

If there are no alternative contacts then I would use the whois contact.

Good tips Dave. We have a like mind I see.
I always place the name of my domain in the
subject box, but however I never put the extension
there. If you're having trouble with whois then scan
the site itself for an "aboutus" or "contact" link.

Another tip, keep your emails short and sweet and
dont go overboard in describing why they need your
name. Let them know that you're "contacting", not
"contacted" various parties directly related to your
name and that you're taking offers.

I have recently perfect my technique and I'm sure I will tweak
it again, if anyone wants a draft pm me.

Another thing. As of late, I've started to place a price in my
email. I always state $488 or $1288. I dont know why, but I
like mimicking BuyDomains model for some reason, and hell it
works. Maybe the even number for some reason gives the buyers
and feeling of value or a true deal.

I never ever use the word "domains" in my email.
