No, I think some of them thrived. Like coming to American in the early days. They gave up a lot, but thrived again.
They do a lot worse than that. Concentration camps for millions of Uyghurs. The arrest of people for religious or political beliefs, and the harvesting of their body parts even while they are still alive and conscious. The regular use of coordinate programs of anti-Japanese indoctrination whenever politically convenient. Their stated desire to expand their territories (they don't call it expansion - they believe those territories are already theirs). There are literally 10s if not 100s of millions of Chinese who would feel fine if Japanese were slaughtered. Heck, there are probably 10s of millions of Chinese who wouldn't care if other Chinese are slaughtered. The Chinese government is far more ruthless than Putin's government, but maybe better contained and more strategic.
Nobody in East Asia is worried about the Russians. There is simply no comparison between Russia and China in the sense. Not to mention few Russian borders with countries here other than with China.
