They will be soon enough, the way the money is being spent.
Somehow, I think not. I can't wait for Republicans to get into power and do anything at all to help cure the world in some fashion instead of simply crying bout anything they can.

I'm just waiting for someone to bring up the tearful "our children will inherit " lament. ..
People always try to pass the 'buck' on to the next generation, but this time there's a real chance it's going to blow up in your face.

I have a native american friend that was asked once, if she thought 'we' should give America back to the Indians.

Her reply was, "Clean it up, first."

In a very real sense, the next generation will be expecting us to solve the problems that we created, before expecting them to clean up our mess. At some point America is going to default on our loans, there is simply no way out of it; liberals will continue to gain power by growing the entitlement culture, expenditures will outpace revenue, the actual cost of health care will continue to skyrocket thanks to the red tape entitlements they are dishing out, etc.

I can see the next generation calling for a timeout and saying, "Hey we didn't sign on for any of this shit, we aren't paying for it."

If you are serious about this issue and not just liberal-bashing, why aren't you also disgusted with the republican party that constantly harps about how terrible spending and the deficit is, that endlessly campaigns on reform, yet inevitably ends up contributing to the deficit. When was the last time the republicans had a balanced budget? Look what happened when they inherited a surplus.

Yes, the current administration has significantly raised the deficit, but the conservatives haven't helped the matter. They cry about bureaucracy and being over-regulated, and then come up with stuff like Homeland Security and the Patriot Act. (I'm not forgetting congressional duplicity.) I just don't see a good policy being put forth from either side. Military and social expenditures are huge, but what are you going to do, stop everything and suffer the consequences of that? Rooting out waste and undeserved spending is easy to say but nearly impossible to do. Instead, we try to assign blame and offer up feeble fixes as if we were talking about managing a family's budget.

A thread like this should be created for many European/ Middle Eastern/ Asian countries too. So many issues in those regions. No need to single out one country.

European countries spy on their citizens, and other countries too. What's the difference? They also spend money they don't have...

What about the Middle East, and Asia's where human rights are violated all the time? Why should we constantly feel sorry for people, who can't treat their own people right?

In some Asian countries, women are treated like they are sub-human. Do women deserve to be raped and beaten? In the US, someone who is guilty of such crimes, will suffer the consequences of their actions... In Asia, it's a norm-it gets overlooked, and nothing gets done. Why don't people rant about that?

What about Paki's nuclear weapons? I think those should be confiscated from them-ASAP!

Racism in European countries is alive and kicking. What about that?

And sure, South Africa also has it's own issues. A Muslim Terrorist organization, who, in 1996 came to our home to kill my father- is again up and running-bombing shopping malls last week. They killed many of our friends and neighbors -bombing their homes, killing women and children. And the opposition to the ruling government party, the "Democratic Alliance" supports them!!

Plenty of Barbarians THE WORLD OVER!!

I was against the overspending that occurred in currently retired Bush's terms, as were a number of fiscal conservatives. There's not much more the House can do right now though, given that every budget they produce to lower the rate of spending and decrease the deficit gets thrown out.

What change? Whatever is left over is a tip, isn't it? Besides, conservatives are a compassionate group who put people ahead of money, so I'm sure you won' t mind donating your change so it can make sure art is subsidized, and we all have a few paintings hanging on our office walls. We can commission a few million reprints of Munch's The Scream to hang in the offices of conservatives so they don't lose sight of their outrage and fear of the current administration.
Tell you what, so you don't call me Ebanezer Scrooge, I'll offer $25 trillion. 18T for the debt and the rest for whatever, including finishing off the "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska. I think that's pretty fair.

Very true, but the US still harbors a mindset stuck in the 20th century when the dollar was almighty, galvanized in Reaganesque rhetoric of an invincible superpower. The days of US supremacy are drawing to an end.

Iceland has suffered a banking crash but that was on the scale of a small country. It has recovered for the most part. But what do think the implications will be for the rest of the world when the US does default ?
Don't tell me this is not going to happen... history repeats itself always. Fiat currencies always fail, it's just a question of time.

Oh by the way you wonder why foreigners always criticize the US of A ?.
Because US actions and policies have an impact on the rest of the world. The US tends to mess a lot in the affairs of other countries, sometimes for good, but US interference has been somewhat disruptive lately.
You know, Russia or China are repressive regimes too, like so many countries in the world, but they also understand that their laws do not apply their national boundaries. The US does not.
While I have no sympathy for tyrants I have to say I am hardly affected by what the Chinese government does at home. I'm not being unfair, the US is not the worst nation on Earth, far from it.

Actually, trying to limit the size of government by reducing spending IS helping people, by reducing their taxes, by allowing them to be creative in a less restrictive environment, by giving them access to energy so they can afford to have heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, by stimulating their entrepreneurial skills and teaching them how to develop and depend upon their own skills and desires.

Being late to the discussion kind of sucks... However, I am someone who believes in American exceptionalism, lets face it... America Rocks! Screw it... The West Rocks!!! But we've been blindly reacting to world events since the end of the cold war, alternating between supporting dictatorships, theocracies, and imposing democracy.... Meanwhile, we've let other countries develop their economies, develop systems and trade organizations outside of "our" control and now they are starting to believe that they are exceptional too, they no longer look toward us as that Beacon, that shining light... we've dropped the ball and we need to pick it back up.

Don't get me wrong I think we need to take care of ISIS, or whatever they are called today... But I also believe that we need to disengage from that which does not benefit us financially and Turn off, tune out and drop out of the crap that does not create wealth.

It could easily happen that the US defaults. But if it does, what happens to the rest of the world currencies and economies? Why is the deficit so high? Where has that money been moving to? The US has been investing in many countries on various continents since the recent global economic crisis, and in effect has significant interests in those lands. In fact, their interests globally are much higher now that it was prior to the recession. They have many countries dependent on them-for economic activity and financial aid, and they can take many of countries down with them-wrecking havoc worldwide.

They also have other means of ensuring that they remain afloat. Propaganda in the media is a great tool-and they are the masters at that.

Oh by the way you wonder why foreigners always criticize the US of A ?.
Because US actions and policies have an impact on the rest of the world. The US tends to mess a lot in the affairs of other countries, sometimes for good, but US interference has been somewhat disruptive lately.

The US does get involved in issues that they sometimes shouldn't have-in retrospect. But they have grown so big -with interests all over the world, that they can choose where to get involved. Iraq, and North Africa should probably have been left alone, because now those regions are unstable. But let's face it-plenty of vigilantes over there wanted a regime change during those periods. Maybe they (the ones who wanted a regime change) have a change a heart now, because their own people are tearing each other apart- BUT the US wouldn't have been able to effect those changes without the help of people in those lands. So who is really to blame?

!
This thread has actually become more international ttan it was before. Myself, Domainace, sdsinc, yourself and others talk about whats happening in other parts of the word. Impossible to separate American politics and how it influences for the good or for the bad other parts of the world.

The name of this thread should be: "

or something to that effect

Since you are from South Africa perhaps you could enlighten us as to why racial quotas are implemented on Sports teams there?

Just imagine someone trying to implement racial quotas on American Basketball or other big sports teams.

Yes, there are quite a bit of non-Americans responding to this thread. Which is good for purposes of debate. But the reality is, other countries have more, or equally horrific things going down over there-which many here should realise. A world politics thread-does seem like a good idea.

The government actually appointed some kind of a "team" to attend to the racial issues in Rugby, after SARU (SA Rugby Union) began rejecting applications from non-whites.

I think this issue became worse when SARU and the media (8 years ago) began making fun of the non-white coach. The government didn't have any real quotas in place then- and what was asked of SARU was rejected by them. But as time went by, non-white players were refused to play/ removed from the team completely on a provincial level...so they never even made it to the National team. Some of the (white) players got a bit physical with these "colored" players... and some racist remarks were made by the white players. It was actually very bad many years ago, when Afrikaner rugby players from one University attacked non-whites from another university when they had a game.

Government is a bit more firm these days, since SARU never paid attention to the requests. Government supports SARU financially 100%, and have recently said they funding will be in jeopardy if they do not play along.

Even the recent quotas were not being followed by SARU... I do wonder if they will adhere to the new quotas, which requires one third of the team to be non-white players, and to have at least 20% non-white players actually playing on the field.

I personally do not like rugby-because racially-motivated attacks against people of color at games, etc is a reality. Rugby is a "white man's game", and I have stayed far away from supporting the local teams at the stadiums. I have never attended a rugby match in my life, even after 20 years of "freedom". I don't think it's wise. I prefer soccer matches-very chilled over there... beers and biltong (beef jerky) goes down very well over there too. :D

Creative in a less restrictive environment?
Access to energy?
Stimulating entrepreneurial skills?

This is all down how - by limiting the size of government (not reducing it) - we magically turn into a capitalist wonderland?

If rugby is a "white man's sport" and blacks don't really have much interest in it, why the quota system? Why don't they use the quota system in soccer?

As she explains, there seems to be still quite a bit of prejudice in South Africa. Enough that the whites in control are keeping the blacks out. The blacks like the game but are up against white players, officials, owners and sponsors who are making life miserable for the blacks; hence, the "white man's sport" comment.

Think of the quota the same way as bussing blacks to predominantly white schools in the 60's - 80's; it was the only way to integrate. Nasty times.
