But maybe what Americans should be doing is address the root cause of violence.
It's only in America that there are so many shootouts and that children do shooting drills, and now they push the insanity to arming teachers, and they have the nerve to call other countries sh!tholes. In other countries schools don't look like prisons or airports, with metal detectors and armed guards standing by. A reminder to pupils that their country is a prison state and has more inmates than any other nation on Earth.
The American expats that I meet often tell me about their children and how they want them to grow in a safe and sound environment. I am not anti-guns, in fact some countries have high rates of gun ownership, for example in Europe you have Switzerland or the Czech Republic where the laws are more relaxed. Yet incidents are rare, because people behave responsibly and the social problems are not as exacerbated as in the US. American society compared to other countries is rough and more violent, human life is cheap too (it's the only Western country that still upholds the death penalty), and violence breeds more violence.
Put it differently, you reap what you sow.
What you consider the new normal is not normal.
