I had a very interesting conversation last week with some young future leaders of Southeast Asia. Almost all hold government positions, and a few were from Myanmar. It was painfully honest, and some tears flowed.

I realized Detroit and many American cities had a lot in common with many of these places, at least with regards to corruption.

The Burmese are all young enough that they have little memory of anything except democracy - they were children when the junta last had control. They are absolutely shocked at this turn of events, and feel helpless. They worked hard to gain their positions in Myanmar society, but felt they had to give up their dreams rather than work for the junta. Already, many in Myanmar are simply not showing up to work. The military, in their brute greed and short-sightedness, are willing destroy the country before they give up their power. The feeling of helplessness among decent people is overwhelming.

I listened to them talk, and felt the pain in their faces and voices. And it made me think how completely unaware most Americans are of how fragile their lives and freedoms are - and how carelessly they are risking those freedoms now.

I just want to say: wake the fcuk up. You are at each others throats over petty issues like local abortion laws, transgender rights, and "feelings" while your leaders drive the country into the same direction as Myanmar. The degree of police control over the US is already well beyond the pale, and nobody seems to notice. How far will you have to be pushed before you do?

Thought this worth providing, just so you can see how crappy the world news is that most Americans (and Brits) get. Complete fiction about the 2011 tsunami and quake in Japan....

The BBC's website ran photos of commuters wearing face masks, or "radiation masks" as they called them, implying that they were trying to protect themselves against radiation when in fact the simple white surgical masks were what a great many people in Japan wore in the early spring as a preventative measure against pollen allergies.

CNN continually ran alarmist banners along the bottom of the screen. "Nuclear Cooling Has Failed. Radiation Cloud Could Reach U.S. Friday," went one. The station reported fewer people in the streets of downtown Tokyo, attributing the decrease to a "mass exodus" from the metropolis -- people "fleeing" rather than perhaps just staying home as a result of transportation difficulties or on instruction from their places of employment.

Neal Cavuto of "Fox's Your World with Neal" showed a screen graphic depicting two nonexistent nuclear power plants in Japan, including one in the densely populated Shibuya quarter of Tokyo called the "Shibuya Eggman," which was actually a nightclub.

But perhaps the most hysterical was a story in the March 17 edition of the London tabloid "The Sun," six days after the quake and tsunami, headlined "Nightmare Warning to Brits as Nuke Crisis Continues, Get out of Tokyo Now." It featured a telephone interview with a Tokyo resident, a British woman, who described Tokyo as "a city in fear of nuclear catastrophe -- with food, water, and fuel running out and radiation levels from Japan's stricken nuclear reactors reaching 10 times normal."

Subtitled "My Nightmare Trapped in City of Ghosts -- in Tokyo," the article quoted the woman as saying, "I'm stuck in a part of the city that resembles a ghost-town. Normally the streets bustle like nowhere else on earth. But I look outside now and they are completely deserted. It's like London in the zombie movie "28 Days Later." The streets are silent. We live near the center of Tokyo and yet there is no movement at all... There is no petrol, no water, no food... What if every day the radiation continues to double?" This was followed the next day (March 18, a Saturday) by a Reuters wire service report that said millions in Tokyo remained indoors on Friday, fearing a blast of radioactive material.

I found such reporting surreal because on the day cited in the "City of Ghosts," I had taken the Yurakucho subway line from Toyosu to Yurakucho for a dinner meeting at the FCCJ. Life seemed pretty normal to me. Boys were playing baseball in the park across the street from my house as I passed on my way to the subway station.

The Yurakucho Line was operating at 80% capacity, but the cars were as crowded as they always were, and so was Bic Camera, the multistoried electronics store in front of Yurakucho Station, although the indoor lights were somewhat dimmed. The schools were open, if on a voluntary-attendance basis, and salarymen were at work. There was no rationing at the Lawson convenience store on the ground floor of the Yurakucho Denki Building, except for batteries, and the lights were all on at the twentieth floor Main Bar of the FCCJ, the reporters swapping tsunami stories on their way to getting hammered.

"Did you see this bullshit Reuters report," boomed Karel Van Wolferen as I walked in. "I can't believe the bullshit these bullshit reporters put out. Doesn't anybody look out the window for Christ's sake?"

None of us could find any evidence of an imminent doomsday blast of radioactive material. In fact, the radiation in Tokyo that day was 0.053 microsieverts according to the Asahi Shimbun, which ran daily readings, a figure that was lower than the annual average of 0.078.

Like many other foreigners living and working in Tokyo, I was deluged with messages from relatives and friends abroad, wondering if my wife and I were all right and asking when we were going to evacuate, suggesting strongly that it was time for us to fly back to California.

Have we moved on past Aunt Jemima, Mr. Potato Head, and Dr. Seuss now?

You guys attack Jill Biden for not being a "real doctor" but now idolize Dr. Seuss. Guess what?

Theodor Seuss Geisel, popularly known as Dr Seuss, wasn't a real doctor. Instead he used the honorific "Dr" in order to appease his father who expected him to study medicine.

We can focus on the real issues now like the de-sexualization of a female cartoon character. These are the real issues that people care about!!!

In a newly revealed phone call, President Donald Trump asked a Georgia law enforcement official to find evidence of fraud with absentee-by-mail ballots.

"Whatever you can do, Frances, it would be — it's a great thing," Trump said to Georgia Secretary of State chief investigator Frances Watson in December. "When the right answer comes out, you'll be praised."

"I can assure you that our team and the GBI, that we're only interested in the truth and finding the information that's based on the facts," Watson told Trump. "We've been working 12-, 16-hour days and we're working through it. And I do appreciate you calling and I know that you're a very busy, very important man."

When Trump spoke to Watson in late December, he urged her to expand the probe of absentee signatures to look several years back and focus attention away from Cobb County.

"If you get to Fulton, you're going to find things that are going to be unbelievable," Trump said. "Fulton is the motherlode."

But on Dec. 29, just four days before Trump would call Raffensperger and urge him to "find" nearly 12,000 votes to flip the electoral results...

"Based on the result of the audit, the Cobb County Elections Department had a 99.99% accuracy rate in performing correct signature verification procedures," the report reads. "No fraudulent absentee ballots were identified during the audit."

In a statement, the secretary of state's office pointed to the November results being counted three times, including a full hand count of 5 million ballots, as evidence that the election should be trusted.

"This phone call is just one more example of how Secretary Raffensperger's office's public comments also reflect what was said in one-on-one conversations: We would follow the law, count every legal vote and investigate any allegations of fraud," spokesman Ari Schaffer said. "That's exactly what we did, and how we arrived at the accurate final vote tally."

https://sos.ga.gov/admin/uploads/Cobb County ABM Audit Report 20201229.pdf

Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani went before state lawmakers and shared a video from State Farm Arena in Atlanta that purportedly showed illegal ballots being added to the totals that cost Trump a victory. But the full video, as well as testimony from multiple state and local officials — including chief investigator Watson — debunked those claims and found normal vote-counting occurred.

The former president's actions in the months of November through January may have carried political consequences and could bring legal ones, too. Trump held himself as a Standard saying, "I will be with you", during the assault of the US capitol building on January 6.

Biden to sign popular stimulus bill today.

$1,400-per-person stimulus payments that will send money to about 90% of households.

The GOP dropped the ball on this one. Good luck defending your votes against a popular bill that sends assistance to 90% of people, during a pandemic.

Oh, you are worried about the debt...after Trump added 7.8T in 4 years.

Oh the GOP is concerned after they added the same amount to the debt to pay for tax cuts that largely benefited the rich.

https://thehill.com/policy/finance/382319-gop-tax-law-will-add-19-trillion-to-debt-cbo

What no GOP member voted against it? They only started caring about the debt again on January 20th...lol

Surely, all the people complaining about "socialism" will not cash their checks right. LOL

We all know everyone is cashing their check. They are fine getting a check, they just don't want others to get one.

Thank you for pointing these out. It is obvious that those divisions exist in our society (as is evidenced in this thread).

Genocide is a human phenomenon that can be analysed and understood, and consequently, may be prevented. Prevention measures may be implemented at any stage.

For a more detailed, impartial analysis of the stages of genocide and its prevention, see:

1. Classification
Groups in a position of power will categorize people according to ethnicity, race, religion or nationality employing an us versus them mentality.

Prevention: Create universalistic institutions that foster social cohesion.

2. Symbolisation
People are identified as Jews, Roma or Tutsis, etc., and made to stand out from others with certain colours or symbolic articles of clothing.

Prevention: Ban the symbols and hate speech and all clothing meant to discriminate against groups.

3. Discrimination
A dominant group uses laws, customs, and political power to deny the rights of other groups. The powerless group may not be granted full civil rights or even citizenship.

Prevention: Ensure full political empowerment and citizenship rights for all groups in a society. Discrimination on the basis of nationality, ethnicity, race or religion should be outlawed.

4. Dehumanisation
The diminished value of the discriminated group is communicated through propaganda. Parallels are drawn with animals, insects or diseases.

Prevention: Promptly denounce and punish perpetrators and make hate crimes and speech culturally unacceptable. Sanction all incitements to commit genocide.

5. Organisation
A state, its army or militia design genocidal killing plans.

Prevention: Outlaw membership in these militias and sanction their leaders. Impose arms embargoes on the countries involved and create commissions of inquiry.

6. Polarisation
Propaganda is employed to amplify the differences between groups. Interactions between groups are prohibited, and the moderate members of the group in power are killed.

Prevention: Protect these moderate members and human rights groups. Seize the assets of the oppressors and refuse their access to international travel.

7. Preparation
The victims are identified, separated and forced to wear symbols. Deportations, isolation and forcible starvation. Death lists are drawn up.

Prevention: Humanitarian aid, armed international interventions or major support for the victims to ensure their ability to defend themselves.

8. Persecution
Victims are identified and isolated based on their ethnic or religious identity. Death lists are drawn up. In state sponsored genocides, members of victim groups may be forced to wear identifying symbols. Their property is often expropriated.

Prevention: Regional organisations and the international community must mobilise themselves to assist or help the victims.

9. Extermination
The massacres begin. The perpetrators see their actions as “extermination” since they do not consider their victims to be entirely human.

Prevention: Only large-scale armed interventions can stop genocide. The international community must support the operations by providing air transport, equipment and financial support.

10. Denial
The perpetrators of the genocide deny having committed their crimes. Victims are often blamed. Evidence is hidden and witnesses are intimidated.

Prevention: An international tribunal or national court must prosecute the criminals. Public education.

what the hell did Dr. Seuss do ?? I missed out on this one

Organizations lobbied to get rid of the University Of Texas song .. “The Eyes Of Texas”. The UT alumni stepped up .. to include HOF running back Earl Campbell ..and told the university .. NO .. so it is all water under the bridge today as UT will indeed keep the historical song .. there is not one thing racist about the song .

with allegations that are completely unsubstantiated to change things because people think they are racist images .. songs .. food and ect ... will hurt long term credibility as well as continue to hurt race relations IMO

The publisher of Dr. Seuess made a business decision to no longer publish (6) books, on their own.

There was no "ban". It was the publisher that deemed them offensive.

Now it is the latest irrelevant shiny object for some people to hyperventilate over, instead of real issues.

Aunt Jemima, Mr. Potato Head, Dr. Seuss, now the cartoon rabbit in Space Jam. Some people are looking for anything to be outraged over.

"Cancel Culture" is the new "War on Christmas".

"Cancel Culture" is actually free market. They are objecting to private companies making decisions for their own products.

They cancelled your thoughts
They cancelled the Dr. Seuss
Books that you bought

And history they said
They even cancelled
Poor Mr. Potato Head
They'll cancel your clothes
And the shoes that you wear
They'll cancel your opinions

Stop trying to cancel

Dr. Seuss was too wholesome and popular and obviously in the way of the leftist agenda "get them while they're young". Strange how Disney won't get cancelled for their past works.
Kids learn all of this woke political correctness at school every day.

I could point out some of the words and images that may be construed as racist, but rather than racist, I would err on the side of stereotypical ignorance.

Personally, I prefer maple syrup :beaver:

I thought @sonatime lived in Canada... 'True North, Strong and Free' :xf.wink:

Dr. Seuss's most famous books tend to promote liberal and anti-authoritarian messages. The best-known example is probably The Lorax, a save-the-environment parable, but it's hardly the only one. The Butter Battle Book is a Cold War satire, and the eponymous villain of Yertle the Turtle is meant to echo the rise and fall of Adolph Hitler. Dr. Seuss changed his views over time, and he also published cartoons that were clearly anti-racist.
