Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

This question may have been asked (and answered), but I did not see it.

I have some .tel domains. All are developed, at least minimally, and have my email address in them. Is there a way to change the email address to reference the .tel, but also have it forwarded, redirected, to my email address?

For example:

current email: [email protected]
to
.tel reference email: [email protected]

Some registrars have enabled email forwarding and this can be completed within your registrars "control panel" (not telhosting). It depends on whether they've configured/enabled this feature for a .tel domain.

I have a few .tels with DomainMonster, DomainPeople and Name. DomainMonster is the only one that successfully forwards email sent to a .tel email address. This feature does not appear to work with Name or DomainPeople (with DomainPeople you can't even enable the whois protector!).

Hope that helps

Just need to promote the website now..hmm, another nice challenge.
As I have asked before and gotten no response, how do the .tel directory builders plan on promoting your sites?

You will not be getting worthwhile SE traffic (not now, not ever). That is certain due to the lack of text content. So I guess you are left with PPC then.

I have stated this before. The search engines will dislike .TEL
Not because of the lack of content but they will see every .TEL
domain as a micro search engine. So its not in their interest, just my
opinion.

Thinking about creating a script that will update the free text area in my .tel with my tweets using the the twitter api. I am still having some issues with php and ajax api.

Has anybody made anything like it yet or progress using the telhosting interface ??

I saw a few days ago some php sample files on Telnic now.

@chader144 let me know what you need. there are enough samples out there now that it should be quite straightforward.

Here's a test. Do a search at Google on Cigarettes.tel and tell me what you find. In case you don't want to, I'll tell you. You'll find 4 tel domains in the first 6 positions on page 1. Of course, this is a very direct search with dotTel directly in the search. Few people are going to search for a domaindottel, but that isn't the point. The point I am trying to make is that Google has already listed these names. There is no question about whether they will or not. They already have. Other TEL names like realestate.tel and lawyers.tel show the same effect. Tel names are getting indexed. Google doesn't seem to have a problem with TEL at all. Since Google is what people generally mean when they talk about search engines, and Google is listing TEL, why do you say that they won't? Isn't it wise to formulate an opinion based on research and not just repeating what others are saying (also based on opinion) at the forums and blogs?

I did your test, and you are right, when you enter Cigarettes.tel in google.
When I did a search, entered just cigarettes, a .tel was not found in the first 30 pages of google's results.
Although google is indexing the .tel domains, I have yet to see one at or near the top of the rankings, as when cigarettes.tel is entered.
I certainly hope this changes, as I own a number of .tel

The question is not whether .tel names will be indexed (they are and they will be), but how they will rank. I would guess 'traditional' parameters like contents (or the lack thereof :D) and link juice would still apply. Given the absence of real contents you start at a disadvantage.
Google is a search engine while .tel works like a directory. These are different things. It's like having Dmoz indexed in google :p

if i google "layoff.tel", it's the second search result followed by a bunch of state.layoff.tel subdomains

if i google "delaware layoff" or "florida layoff", the state.layoff.tel subdomains appear on the first page

of course i have no idea what any of this means

Well, I hope Google invents a way to earn money with .TEL in the future
as for now they will loose money cause xxxhotels.com maybe has google-ads
and xxxhotels.tel not. So every time someone uses Telsaurus(beta) to find
info it passes the google-ads and the contact sites listed in the .TEL
domains mostly won't have google-ads.
So, they are biting in their own tail at the moment.

It is a pretty well known fact that Google puts a lot of emphasis on the age of the domain. TEL has only been online for a few months, so of course TEL is not yet ranking on the first page of the SERPs. That's obvious.

As for content, TEL has content too. There are two blocks where 256 characters can be added (Text Header & Free Text). 512 characters is more than enough content to get indexed. That's not to mention all of the non-linking information that can currently be added. Who is to say that future versions of TEL will not add even more versatility in the future. True, content is king, but back links are queen. A good solid back link strategy is important and that can be done with TEL just as it can with COM, ORG and the rest. Also updating content is important. SEs like to see a site that is constantly changing with fresh content being added. Fresh content is always important.

Where people could easily go wrong is by adding too many links to a single page. Too many external links per page equals link farm. That's always a bad SEO tactic regardless of the TLD is TEL or not.

Your arguments go wrong because you oversimplify TEL by saying that its all links and no content and then you attack that oversimplification. The truth is, TEL has everything it needs to be indexed in the long term. People just have to work at it like any other new TLD. If a TEL owner does not do their leg work with TEL, they will fail. That doesn't mean that TEL has failed, just that people, once again, don't know what they are doing when buying into new TLDs.

TEL is not an easy way to the top. TEL is work and if a person is not up to the task, maybe they should pick a parkable extension and stick to some parking program instead.

This is simply HUGE! It could assist dramatically in taking .TEL "viral"!
Any info regarding Twitter and/or any other microblog apps info that can be used in conjunction with .TEL into this thread for discussion is in everybody's best interest. Bring it forward fellas! :gl:
Personally, I am open to any and all ideas regarding this Twitter/microblogging phenomena and .TEL and regged the following with this in mind.
I just am not sure how to proceed ..... yet. Need more info.

It looks like each TEL has Google Maps on it under the "Location Record" record section. That link goes directly to Google page that has Google ADs on it. So how do you figure they are biting their own tail or that they are not making money? Google's got a plan for TEL and have implemented it. Have you even thoroughly gone over the TEL interface or are you just repeating what others have said?

TEL is a pretty good move for Google. They get all the map traffic on it and it puts them one up on both Yahoo and Mapquest. I don't see a Mapquest button at TEL.

Sorry, your argument is a non-starter, just like the link-farm, no content, non-bloggable arguments.

That's the problem many people have in the "money-making" era and that is they tend to look for the money first rather then looking to provide a service. Forget adsense because that's not where the money is at. It's in Customer Service. Give them what they want and they will pay for it.

Why earn a penny here and there when you can earn a living everywhere. - Go .Tel

I agree completely. Think long term - free listings, for a while, along with some useful informative (maybe public service) contacts, and chances are that when it takes off, you will have willing customers.
And it will take off.
