For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Just noticed phoneshop.tel is currently going for 110 Eur with two bids and three days to go at Sedo. Is this the first .tel in auction?

As far as I know. There were two sales here at NP so far (last I checked). but I think this is the first auction at Sedo. At least the first one I have heard of.

Please correct me if I am missing something here, some future killer application.

Third party apps that allow for one touch seamless calling to a .tel person, place, live directory, call center or auto attendant phone system.

We haven't even started talking about Pure Mobile Social Networking or the integration of AI into the .tel end user interfaces and applications.

if it goes over $1500 (actual 10% = $150) , then the fee will be 10% of the final selling price , eg. if it sells for $3000 , the fee will be $300



note: since .tel is not mentioned in the other pricing categories , it currently goes to the 'other domains' category (10% with $150 minimum) ... logically it will later on be added to the 'gTLDs + common-TLDs pricing' , which is 10% with $50 minimum

I emailed Sedo over the weekend on this issue. Still waiting to hear back. It will be a big negative for .tel if the brokerage is so high. And for Sedo. Best idea is to bombard them with emails requesting either a special category or to join the parked category. They can't obviously be parked within the Sedo monetization model.

Sedo does not take too kindly to email bombardment. I would suggest a less intrusive approach. Standard communication protocols should suffice. IMHO.

The only viable tel monetization plan I have heard about on this forum relates to creating a directory listing. Thats fine, but I have seen a bunch of such listings appearing on mobi domains and they are simply not compelling. I personally would rather just google a keyword that look through such a limited site.

Aren't directories of links basically the same as parked domains?

The main news at the moment regarding domains is that ppc revenue on parked domains is in decline. My experience in parking in a new TLD such as mobi is that it is not viable/profitable even for extremely generic premium names. That is why there is so much talk in the industry about development. One needs to develop a site at a domain to attract traffic. If it is not possible to develop a site beyond a directory/listing on a tel domain, I can't see this as a viable business model beyond making a few pennies. I am not a naysayer I just don't understand how to monetize.

If there were some way to auto forward from a tel to some other random developed site, then it has a lot of potential to boost traffic to that site. However ICANN has specifically said it will not allow new TLDs that conflict with existing TLDs, so I think if you can auto-forward it would conflict with the mobi TLD and so I would guess it is probably not allowed or possible.

Otherwise the only use I see for .tel is the use that it is intended for, as a contact point. I have registered two tels relating to my name for this purpose. I am quite content to get them and plan to use them, but I don't expect to monetize them.

Making this TLD undesirable to domainers is probably a good thing. The world really doesn't need endless parked pages. Lets use .tel for what it is intended as a point of contact. Lets have all 5 billion people on the planet and every corporation owning their own tel. But lets not have millions of banal directories.

So now what?

I'm interested to hear how the Alaska.tel domain is going to work. And other city and country listings. I am not really sure what to do with my .tel because I honestly don't wish to ruffle too many feathers in the pursuit to make a dollar.

The hotelsuites.tel is also of interest because the city that I have registered is 1 of the top 10 holiday destinations on the planet. There are so many directory based reservation agents websites already catering to this city, that I wouldn't want to scale up to compete in that area.

I was considering to list emergency services and basically maintain a free local based online phonebook. Some premium listed resorts numbers or minimal advertising? I am talking no more than 1000 numbers for the entire city.

I am counting on the .tel template uniformity to bring me up in the google rankings in anycase, so only a matter of time for such a keyword city name?
