Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
GoDaddyGoDaddy
I picked up:

cigarettes.tel
cigarette.tel

I would have like to have gotten tobacco.tel, but missed it. :(

Guess you haven't heard of WIPO? You really should learn a little about your subject before making statements like that...

I already said that this is my opinion.
WIPO does not cover yet all countries. Its an effort for world intellectual properties rights + trademarks

Actually do you believe that a company that sees its trademark registered as .tel will proceed to courts and lets say wins the court after 2-3 years debate?. I very much doubt it..
They will probably pay you off their way....

Ps. my opinion again

Ps2. what if I register my name (George) as a trademark at WIPO. Would people have to pay me royalties for naming their children George?

Why pay for a .tel domain when you can add .tel-like functionality to your existing website for free:
http://snipplr.com/view/5897/download-vcard-script/ ;)

as with any extension it will come down to the quality to the left of the dot

example:

I would rather tell people to find me at John.tel than JohnSmithssite.com/contact

if my name were John

Thank you for posting that. It is some nice code to generate a vCard.
I think you miss the ability to automatically update your contact information on somebody else's system. The way I understand the .tel it will automatically be called through the dns.

These are the arguments of someone who doesn't know anything about TMs.

But CDM's right: time to move on to the "showcase"...

This may have already been asked and answered,
so I'll apologize in advance :)

I noticed some .tel's on Sedo (with bids), which is great,
but I also noticed Sedo says this
.TEL domains can’t be parked.

.TEL domains have recently been made available for registration and these domains can be listed for sale on Sedo with immediate effect.

Please be aware that .TEL domains can't be parked. This is because the TLD has been created for specific technical reasons.

So what would the fees be since you can't change the nameservers?

I just send the telnic video link to my friend and this is what he said:

"when i tried to close the window it filled my screen with like endless windows of that site", I think someone else in this thread had that problem.

Thanks guys,
So it's $150 + a percent of the sale?
or total cost is $150 with nothing else added?

The only viable tel monetization plan I have heard about on this forum relates to creating a directory listing. Thats fine, but I have seen a bunch of such listings appearing on mobi domains and they are simply not compelling. I personally would rather just google a keyword that look through such a limited site.

Aren't directories of links basically the same as parked domains?

The main news at the moment regarding domains is that ppc revenue on parked domains is in decline. My experience in parking in a new TLD such as mobi is that it is not viable/profitable even for extremely generic premium names. That is why there is so much talk in the industry about development. One needs to develop a site at a domain to attract traffic. If it is not possible to develop a site beyond a directory/listing on a tel domain, I can't see this as a viable business model beyond making a few pennies. I am not a naysayer I just don't understand how to monetize.

If there were some way to auto forward from a tel to some other random developed site, then it has a lot of potential to boost traffic to that site. However ICANN has specifically said it will not allow new TLDs that conflict with existing TLDs, so I think if you can auto-forward it would conflict with the mobi TLD and so I would guess it is probably not allowed or possible.

Otherwise the only use I see for .tel is the use that it is intended for, as a contact point. I have registered two tels relating to my name for this purpose. I am quite content to get them and plan to use them, but I don't expect to monetize them.

Please correct me if I am missing something here, some future killer application.

I don't think you are missing anything. I think you summed it up pretty good:

"Otherwise the only use I see for .tel is the use that it is intended for, as a contact point."

This is the "Showcase" thread though and to keep the thread from getting offtrack further discussion should probably go in the .tel discussion thread:

Just noticed phoneshop.tel is currently going for 110 Eur with two bids and three days to go at Sedo. Is this the first .tel in auction?

cracks me up how many peeps write "I just don't get it but I picked up a few I wanted"

That's all that needs to happen for . Tel to be a long term success

The rest will follow
