Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

you will see me in the whois on all the decent $300 landrush drops in 2012.... i'll be registering them for around $8ea then.

Ditto, hopefully by then we'll understand what a decent .tel is. B-)

It will be interesting to see the first .TEL go off the grid. I'm sure there will be someone that will gain access to an 'A' record eventually. Maybe the guy that registered hack.tel will give it a shot. (:talk:)

Took the words out of my mouth, I'm very curious how people hope to earn $$ from these domains aside from speculative resale. I have two .tel's, one for personal use and one for a business I have, both are going to be used as intended, providing contact info. Best wishes to everyone with your .tel registrations.

Personally the few I registered, I don't plan on selling... unless someone makes me an offer I can't refuse of course. I think some of the geo names should do pretty well (I hope). Some of the other generic names that could be used for listings in whatever keyword (like hotels) they have could do real well too if .tel gains some popularity. There are a lot of good ideas floating around for what to do with the .tel domains.

Of course, whether they do well or not is highly dependent on a lot of factors...a few being .tel domains being convenient for people to use on their phones and blackberries, .tel being marketed well by both the domain owners and by the registrars & telnic (They do have a good commercial!), having additional features added when needed or when it could make .tel more useful, and having some .tel developed by an already recognized company take off and gain popularity. The last one doesn't necessarily have to happen, but it could definitely help!

If it flops horribly like like some of the other extensions have, then yeah, some money was probably wasted. I only registered one during the insane price period...since I thought it'd probably flop :p I went back and forth on whether to register it for hours before deciding to take the risk. After reading some of the ideas here though, I now think that there's some hope that it'll catch on and be worth the investment.

If you read the whole thread and read the Telnic site, you will see how these names can be monetized. :]

I just received my refund from asiaregistry.com for NEWS.tel

This is what they have to say

Seemed like an obvious cockup at the registry to me... of all the top premium names, news.tel is right up there and it went in sunrise.

trouble is, not every one will use their .tel right.
I went to lowell.tel and expected to find info on lowell, ma. there, instead it's some guy's name.
What a waste!

If I was on my mobile looking up lowell.tel to find the number for city hall, I would've been disappointed in finding it's actually about "Lowell the horse trainer".

look at houston.tel.
It's parked.
Too much of that will hurt the extension bad.

Excellent...so when North America or South America change their address or phone number, the rest of the world will know where to find them! :]

Just a shot in the dark here but could it possibly be that links/deep links may be to jobs, hotels, real estate, vacations, spas, golf etc in the various states in North America and the countries in South America :?

.tel

Is this new extention like the others ?
I understand that you don't need a website to operate anything.tel
How does it work ?
Will there be a demand for .tel domains ?
It's a bit confusing

That is quite interesting and something i hadnt thought of. Cellular phone networks could easily offer third level domains to their customers, say for example, mike.verizon.tel, james.sprint.tel, lonelygirl15.cingular.tel, and so on ...

Thats a huge market when you think about it. I still get paper statements from my wireless provider, and its always crammed with some color inserts for this or that special offer. Its not hard to image one that will say "sign up now for your personal name.verizon.tel for only $1.95/month!"

.. or potentially just add it in free with their package. "sign up for AT&Ts new social mobility package (tm) and receive your unique .tel identity, free!"

either way it would be marketed to smithereens. :$:

edit: ah, i got to the end of the article and looks like the author made my point

Wonder if that helps them get around number portability in the future?

Some of my GA grabs, not all but a few:

brat
asians
myblackbook (I had 'blackbook' preregged for GA but it went during landrush)
maroon (seems everyone has a "I don't know what I'm going to do with this .tel", this is mine :tri:)

Nice grab on 'asian' kukgle, I'm assuming those were landrush so that's why you didn't go plural?

I have more but these are the less exciting ones ;)

The new .TEL commercial has gone viral http://no_url_shorteners/d8oz6h

Interestingly, when the girl enters Ben's .TEL address into her cell phone, she prefixes it with 'www.'. (:gl:)

I just got RigaHotels.tel, "riga hotels" has 22k exact searches per month on Google and Riga is my hometown :)
so far this is the only name I've registered, maybe will find something else...

update: got LasVegasVacations.tel, shows a lot of searches on Google.

I wonder if it is pure marketing behind the use of the www. prefix ie is to let people know it is another domainname. You dont want the general public to get confused... get them into it bit by bit nice and slowly
