Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

let me know what you think about it :)

I think you wasted a lot of money on these. You could have used the money toward one really good one on the aftermarket. NationalPark isnt too bad but plural would be a lot better. How will you make money from WebAwards.tel or Meat.tel. or Pugs.tel? Also the city of Dubai is going downhill fast. People are rushing to get out of there. I think you will end up dropping most of these next year once the hype has died down. Good luck with them though.

How do you know city.com or pizza.com isn't loaded up with actual porn? The point is that you use search to find new things. Perhaps general purpose search engines will develop specialised features for .tel records? Other specialist directory search engines are being developed.. other things will emerge that haven't even been discussed yet. Think big!

.com names can have anything on them too including porn but if .tel is trying to be like a directory or yellowpages it needs to have only relevant info to work. Imagine if you were at home and opened the yellow pages up and half the info was wrong such as if you went into the automotive section it might have some strip clubs listed instead of cars, or if you went into the real estate section it might just show some random persons home address and phone number, or if you looked up doctors and it showed a sex talk line instead. Would you ever use the yellow pages again? If you have to go to a search engine to find something then it defeats the purpose of .tel. if i go to google to search for plumbers then i will want to see their website which a .tel domain cant have.

Took the words out of my mouth, I'm very curious how people hope to earn $$ from these domains aside from speculative resale. I have two .tel's, one for personal use and one for a business I have, both are going to be used as intended, providing contact info. Best wishes to everyone with your .tel registrations.

Personally the few I registered, I don't plan on selling... unless someone makes me an offer I can't refuse of course. I think some of the geo names should do pretty well (I hope). Some of the other generic names that could be used for listings in whatever keyword (like hotels) they have could do real well too if .tel gains some popularity. There are a lot of good ideas floating around for what to do with the .tel domains.

Of course, whether they do well or not is highly dependent on a lot of factors...a few being .tel domains being convenient for people to use on their phones and blackberries, .tel being marketed well by both the domain owners and by the registrars & telnic (They do have a good commercial!), having additional features added when needed or when it could make .tel more useful, and having some .tel developed by an already recognized company take off and gain popularity. The last one doesn't necessarily have to happen, but it could definitely help!

If it flops horribly like like some of the other extensions have, then yeah, some money was probably wasted. I only registered one during the insane price period...since I thought it'd probably flop :p I went back and forth on whether to register it for hours before deciding to take the risk. After reading some of the ideas here though, I now think that there's some hope that it'll catch on and be worth the investment.

I appreciate the analysis, good to understand your risks. What all too often happens though is unbridled enthusiasm and a lot of junk being reged. As a landrush .mobi investor I watched in horror in the following months as people showcased horrible .mobi registrations, I referred to them as the LookAtMyLame.mobi threads. I also saw it in .asia, .me, .pro, and now .tel. I'm not out to dog the extension as a whole the way some people do, my point is to reg wisely and don't throw money away on junk. I expect there will be some money made by speculators in .tel, but judging by the swelling showcase thread, most will be holding lemons that are rotted past the point of being made into lemonade.

If you read the whole thread and read the Telnic site, you will see how these names can be monetized. :]

There is a giant difference between how names can be monetized and how they are being monetized. Putting theory into practice is often not so easy.

OK, i bought couple of .tels, but didnt have much time to play with registars interface. Is there a way someone could edit specific .tel data, without having to know my registar / hosting password?

Do people actually think people are going to pay them big money to put a link on a .tel domain that has no traffic and is something they never heard of before?

This is the crux of the matter here, I really do not think it will be an easy sell, and I've done my share of ad sales. People will not be lining up to pay money to list their company at a "city".tel for a very long time, if ever. It will take serious promotion of the site to gain any awareness and even then there will need to be a sales infrastructure to go out and sell the ads. Will some serious entrepreneur try? Quite possibly but the park-and-flip domainer isn't going to venture into those waters and is hoping to coat-tail on the efforts of others for some speculative gain.

I think this would help show people that you can do either [ speaking of www.ben.tel/ben.tel ] and you're good to go. It could add to confusion, but overall the message seems clear.

It certainly tells a great story :sold:
You're correct. We decided to show both. Also don't forget that many mobile phones auto-prepend www. when you go to enter an address.

Would like to see people post if their dot-tel was a landrush or GA acquisition.

Maybe assume it's a GA and put "lr" beside in brackets it if it was landrush?

Some really shocking GAs out there so it would be nice to see the distinction.

I think we would see the function to control .tel sub-domain very soon. Only if we can create username and password for people who want to lease our sub-domain, it would work.

I am not going to take 5 dollar a year and let the leaser request to change their details 5 times a month.

Great sale D-:

Am I right in saying that anything registered: Mon Mar 23 23:59:59 GMT 2009 was registered in landrush?

Also, how much did the landrush applications cost?

Apparently the zone for your Domain Name has still not been created... I dono y it takes such a long time; also, I guess there is an Issue from Telnic's side coz Domain Names are getting stuck for more than 24 hours....
