Here are a list of 40 , yes 40 companies that currently offer social and professional networking tools to those looking to make use of them.

In a blog written by Jeremiah Owyang, he states:

Social Networking goes mainstream

I was recently asked by a buddy to name off some social networking platforms that could be branded or changed as needed .

The List

Here’s a list of Social Networking platforms, or suites that you could take and rebrand, if you know of any others, please leave a comment (many of the following are from those that left comments, like Gideon who left quite a few links). Not sorted in any particular order:

BlogTronix
I met Vassil, the CEO, I think it has a chance of giving Sharepoint a run for it’s money given it’s Intranet type features

Sharepoint
Microsoft’s collaboration suite is getting social networking tools for it’s 2007 version, I’m waiting for Microsoft to call me to do a demo.

Five Across
SF company just acquired by Cisco

Community Server
I was looking at this while at a previous role, this is what the famous Channel 9 was built on, as well as Dell 1to1 and Xbox

PeopleAggregator
I’m having dinner with Marc Canter tonight of Broadband Mechanics, I’ll be video interviewing him to learn about his “white-label MySpace-in-a-Box”

Social Platform
Just saw this one, looks pretty interesting.

SiteLife from Pluck
Pluck already has some other products this could be interesting.

Affinity Circles
This seems to have quite a few educational clients, interesting.

Kick Apps
White label hosted version.

Web Crossing
Social networking and collaboration suite.

Crowd Factory
“Platform that allows you to create a social network site similar to MySpace”

CollectiveX
Doesn’t appear to be a white label, but it’s certainly a Social Network, pretty interesting.

ElggSpaces
Doesn’t appear to be able to be white label, but may have open ID architecture.

Me.com
“Build your own community with SNAPP! It’s as easy as point and click”

Onesite
“Customized white-label social networking partnership solutions for large media, entertainment, and community brands.”

PHPfox
Looks like it has some of the open source apps I’ve used before glued together for a social network. I wonder if this will be a dedicated feature available to most web hosts.

Select Minds
“SelectMinds pioneered corporate alumni programs over 7 years ago and continues to push the boundaries of technology in this industry to provide corporate social networking solutions that help our clients and their current and former employees build and maintain the professional relationships that drive success.”

Small World Labs

“Our platform creates two versions of your site,
one for the Web, and one for mobile phones.”

Drupal
“Equipped with a powerful blend of features, Drupal can support a variety of websites ranging from personal weblogs to large community-driven websites.”

“Whether you are embarking on a Citizen Journalism initiative, creating a corporate blogging environment, or launching a consumer generated marketing program, the iUpload Customer Conversation System gives you the platform and tools to accomplish your goals. ”

HayStack
“Haystack gives businesses the ability to build social networking capabilities into their websites, encouraging customers and sales reps to create more personal connections. Haystack can also be used to help individuals within organizations connect with each other.”

OmniFuse
“We specialize in rapid creation and adoption of online social networks using our FUSION platform. FUSION combines social networking software with consumer generated media technology to provide a marketing and community building tool for brands, organizations, and other verticals.”

Prospero
“We enable organizations to easily, quickly, and cost-effectively develop branded, integrated communities and social networks comprised of message boards, blogs, ratings, and chats and to manage them using a single, intuitive platform.”

LiveWorld
“Liveworld builds, operates, and moderates social networks and online communities with a difference that creates real solutions to meet real business goals. We are distinguished by these advantages”

Userplane
“Userplane is the premier provider of communication software for online communities. Five hosted web apps comprise the application suite – each adding core, must-have features to thriving websites. The apps are robust yet lightweight, cross-platform with no user installation, and customizable for a site’s specific needs.”

Ning
“Ning is the fast and free way to create custom Social Websites!”

The Port
“Grow a community and extend your members’ visit to your site. Provide robust social networking tools to stimulate community interaction and foster word-of-mouth.”

Joomla

“…is an online social networking software that allows you to start your own site just like Friendster and MySpace. The E-Friends software allows members to connect to people in their personal networks and community, creating a new online interactive resource that is based on a trusted network of friends and associates on the internet.”

intronNetworks
Complete graphic and content customization
“Can be attached via web services to any database. User Features include ability to interactively search and filter results of matches out of 1000’s of users in seconds. ” (From comments as I can’t copy and paste any text as the site is in flash)

DZOIC
“start your own social networking portal? If so, then you have just found what you were looking for. Feature Rich User End, Advanced Admin Console, Paid Membership Integration, Flash Instant Messenger and Chat, Fulfeatured Modules”

Boonx
“Use flexible and powerful community software and implement your brilliant idea in real life. Build a community site using Dolphin, and enhance it with Ray and Orca.”

World Web (in German)
I can’t confirm this site meets the criteria, since I don’t speak German

Dave Networks
“provider of an integrated video distribution and social community platform designed to ignite brands.”

His conclusion is that the social network tool marketplace has reached saturation point and some companies will flop some get bought out and the remaining few will have their niche carved out pretty strongly.

MY CONCLUSION IS THAT I DO NOT SEE THE POINT IN WAITING TO SEE WHAT TOOLS DEMAND MEDIA HAVE TO BRING OUT IF YOU ARE READY NOW TO DEVELOP A SOCIAL NETWORK AROUND YOUR DOT TV NAME.

I CANNOT SEE DM OUTSHINING ALL 40 COMPANIES TO MAKE IT WORTH THE WAIT. AND IF ITS ABOUT FREEBIES.... THATS OK , IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO BUILD ONLY THE MOST BASIC OF SITES, IF YOU ARE REACHING FOR BROADER HORIZONS AND YOUR BUSINESS PLAN REVOLVES AROUND CREATING A SOCIAL NETWORKING COMMUNITY........I WOULD NOT WAIT ANOTHER SECOND....BUT GET ON THE PHONE/NET AND FIND OUT WHICH OF ALL THE EXISTING COMPANIES OUT THERE RIGHT NOW WILL BE THE ONE THATS RIGHT FOR YOU.

I WILL BE DOING MY RESEARCH AND POSTING MY FINDINGS ON MY SITE OVER THE NEXT WEEK OR SO.SHOULD MAKE FOR INTERESTING READING.

Im developing a geo.tv right now as we speak and I am using two companies on your list, one I am paying for a script and one I will be utilizng some of the free services.

I am charging ahead and am not waiting as it is now time to get .tv going and dig into the ground. Even if I have to 100% scrap the site in 6 months, at least I will have something up in BETA that I could always use for a sales pitch.

I feel strongly about Demand Media as becoming a successful business, but I am irritated that not one of my questions was answered, especially about bandwidth and if the tools would force us to run any ads etc...

Ive posted these questions publicly and sent emails but heard nothing.

I also do not have faith in ENOM customer service at this point It makes me nervous, because when .TV hits, we will never be able to get through on the phone unless you know someone personally.

I have found a great company for bandwidth, 500 GB data transfer per month, for $25, which is a fairly decent deal. However I wont name them until the site is up and I can see it actually works the way it says it does.

I will say that they have responded to about 6 different tickets (for questions not problems)in less than 1-2 hrs, and everything so far works great.

I dont feel that if I had a tech problem I would get that type of service from ENOM, and that makes me really worried. I do not want to be bogged down in tech or server issues when I will already be bogged down in running a site and marketing it.

If anyone knows any better deals on bandwith (dedicated or semi dedicated only please and no windows servers) please add it to this post and we can make this the best development info post yet.

I will post the name of the company once I feel it is delivering as promised, as I have heard both good and bad things and do not want to give bad advice publicly

If anyone needs any tutorials on web design, php, or flash, this site is really good. www.tizag.com

Alot of really easy to read tutorials on that site, even if you dont design, it is good to know a little bit because alot of web site people are scum bags and try to overcharge you for something simple.

Make sure you read the TOS on each carefully to assure yourself you will be able to take your community with you if you decide to use another platform or script.

Cheers!

I asked one company flat out that if I resell the site I keep all 100% profits and they confrimed it with an email.

I reccomend doing this and printing it out and keeping it on file.

Yes transferibility of ownership is another good question.

Do you mean hosting servers or a whole new site layout/design/program license?

Im using a seperate company for hosting as well, and I asked them and they said no problem.

Not only that, but obvioulsy the domain name is seperate so in a way you have three seperate things you are selling.

You could always work it that you arent selling the site, but the domain names and giving the site away free....

Kind of like the Bic Razor's, Sell the blades, give away the handles...

The way I understand the license, and I asked about this very clearly,
When you buy the license for a script you own the license for the one script and can resell it.

They seem more concerned about people buying a license and reselling copies of it.

Not only that, but once you have your site up on your servers, and have changed the passwords, they have no way to stop you on the transfer, and IMO would not have a chance in court, especially if you have the dialog from your emails archived.

Alot of these script people are shaddy anyways...

Thought i'd bump this thread as very useful.

So, which is the best all round social network script you peops have found?
When i hear a few people agreeing on the same one, i know to go for that.

I also need one that has the choice of translating pages/
Is that possible all in one script? What i mean to explain better is, you know when you visit a site and they have small flags in corner to translate by clickingh into french, russian etc.

Thanks for any help in advance :)

This is a great thread that I had forgotten about. Thanks for the bump! I am going to go back through these choices today, and pick something out for antiquemall dot tv, it's time to build that site.
