And why three o's? How could ppl not wonder why there aren't 2 o's or 4?
All IDN extensions have numbers. That's not the point. Confusing 0 for O or o is ridiculous. First suggestion I'd say is, go and get eye glasses. Please name me one extension that you know of that has NUMBER in it!
For the same reason having .com over .us.but why have a .ooo over a .in or .co.in?
For the same reason having .com over .us.
I'll say it again, don't compare 30 yrs old gTLDs with new gTLDs. If .com was going to be launched in the same period with other 1k gTLDs everyone was going to make fun of it.
Internet is changing. few years ago, "brandable" meaningless 5L .com domain market was almost nonexistent, look now many sites are claiming domain sales.
Of course is a lottery ticket. always it has been so. Every one knows that it is more difficult to sell domains in new gTLDs, now that there are many alternatives.
IMO the purpose of all these gTLDs is not to create a domain market, but only for simple user registration.

how much is the reg fee?
Their reasoning is that in order to simplify typing on hand held keyboards they chose 3 of the same letters.
I do not know if O has any special meaning... it could have been G or T or even I for that matter.
The company stated that regarding handheld devices (which is where most of the net use comes from in India) they see it as being easier to type 3 of the same letters in a row.G or T would have been better because O can be confused with the number zero. Also if the idea is to make typing easier then it could be argued that the 2 letter .in is easier to type because there are fewer characters and you can use both thumbs at the same time.
I think there is a distinctive difference phonetically speaking between the O sound and the Zero sound.
As stated above, the way its being marketed is Dot Triple O which passes your radio test.
If you are talking sight wise... I guess 0 can look like o but then you will have to concede in that logic that 0 can be confused in all aspects of extension, C0M, 0RG, C0. If you assume that it can/will confuse some people then you must assume that those same people will confuse 0 (zero) for O in every instance.
I must only associate with a higher set of people because I know of no one that will confuse a number for a letter and/or utilize the sound of O for the number zero.
I guess I may be insulated from a world of ignorance or just socialize with a more leaned group of people.
Lets be honest here, the people you are indicating that could possible confuse the phonetics, look, and style of a zero with O probably are not regular users of the internet let alone domain names. I would hazard to guess that their numbers as a whole are negligible when compared to regular users of the net as far as going online and finding information/sites/stores (i.e. end users).
As far as why triple O as opposed to any other course of letters, the owning company already presented their reasoning for it. They stated that India is an up and coming force to the internet. They currently have about 300 million +/- users and growing but something to the tune of 85% +/- of the users utilize hand held devices.
Their reasoning is that in order to simplify typing on hand held keyboards they chose 3 of the same letters.
I do not know if O has any special meaning... it could have been G or T or even I for that matter.
At the end of the day, the company has a plan to utilize the extension. It has promoted this plan (all be it in India). Considering that India is only a recent entity to the internet (hence the low number of users and domain sales), there is still room for growth and expansion.
The fact that the owning company has presented a plan to utilize the domain in conjunction with part of their business should lend more credibility to the idea that the domain will be around and grow for some time to come.
It is more then many of the other extensions offer. At least they are promoting it, plan to put an IPO behind it, and have a business model to put behind it.
Most are:
Here is a new TLD, buy it.. we have no plans for it.
Its just food for thought.
The more information that is out there, the more that people can make an informed decision.
Cheers
You keep making bad arguments with this.
Nobody thought the o in .com is a zero. Because people say it as a word com, not by letter. It's also well known. Same with .org.
And for to continue to say there is no confusion between 0 o O, is crazy. That's a zero, lowercase and uppercase O. Usability type stuff, something a company should grasp - https://www.google.com/search?q=confusing between 0 and O&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
There are times I get an auto-generated password and I pause when I see something like that, sometimes I get it wrong.
And this:
"Yes, it is being heavily promoted in INDIA. India has over 1 Billion people (with a B)
Even if a small percentage utilizes the extension (lets say 3% for giggles) that comes out to about 30 million"
30 million people. You're posting that to imply there would be 30 million regs. A lot of people buy more than 1 domain, so even more. Well, I can make up scenarios as well. 99.999...% not sure how many 9's I want to use, will probably think that domain extension sucks as well and won't touch it. I'm betting my scenario will be closer than your 30,000,000 +, based on looking at actual numbers. The reg numbers are there. It's a number a lot of new gtld fans don't want to look at. Maybe close their eyes, put their hands over their ears and go na na na na na.
And for transparency's sake because I think even most new gtld fans think this extension sucks, are you:
A. working for or with the company in any way?
B. how many .ooo's do you have?
It has to be something in there for you to try to defend an extension like this with ridiculous arguments.
There are many internet users who have no idea what they type or where to type an address, you can't include everyone. Still to confuse O or o with 0 is ridiculous.Again, you're overestimating the intelligence of ppl. Not everyone is aware of the used characters in an extension. You ASSUME everyone does. Hell, I know a guy who simply typed in "www.Keyword" without an extension & he couldn't figure out why he didn't go anywhere. ppl may need glasses, but you need a lesson in common sense: not everyone understands the things you find trivial

I think this guy (Chubby) invested a lot into the extension and now wants us to think the investment is worthy, in hopes of his portfolio growing in value. The same thing is done with the stock market.
The slashed 0 is the spideriest idea ever made when it was used in mobile phones. Many years ago, some mobile phones with low resolution screen used the slashed 0 which was almost the same with number 8.And for to continue to say there is no confusion between 0 o O, is crazy.
