The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Update - now are 1,570 .au domains listed at Netfleet.com.au

Domain Shed do have some decent domains on there but I think some of the price expectations are unrealistic eg loansconsolidation.com.au for $200K.

I guess with it being early days buyers & sellers are still trying to find the right balance... hopefully a few sales will start to offer guidance for seller expectations

Nice site netfleet.

I agree, the names listed at domainshed do appear to be priced higher than the other local auction sites. Hopefully in a few months we will see domains listed at realsitc prices.

evirtual1 - you make a good point, but going back to netfleet's example of loanconsolidation.com.au, 200k is unrealistic, by all means aim high, even 20k would still be on the high side, but low enough for others not to consider it ridiculous.

The main issue I see is asking 6 figures for a name worth 1/10th or less you will turn all potential buyers off.

Thanks for the compliment, Wade :)

Just to add the example I gave was loansconsolidation.com.au - with an 's'. A very much inferior name to loanconsolidation.com.au IMO

I guess we're all waiting for a few more confirmed sales before we can judge where the market is at....

Fair Dinkum,,,,, I can not belive the prices Australians are being charging for transfers..
seriously, if someone from auDA is reading this.. your "make money for a small few" POLICY sucks big time.

i sold a very solid website for $400 with years of work in it, and you let some registrar with shi$ service and no idea, take nearly half,, for doing jack,, with auda approval. Dam him, and you ,,

It's not auDA charging the fees. It's the registrars. Bit of competition & refinement of transfer process will bring these charges right down.

Already a couple of registrars are doing for $50 inc 2 years renewals so it's not that bad.

Update Part 2 - just short of 1,700 Australian domains listed at Netfleet.com.au!

We are getting great exposure. Netfleet have been listed for a second consecutive week on DN Journal. So if you haven't listed your .com.au domain names to sell, then now is the time!

Can we register a ..com.au domain if the corporation is not present/registered in Australia but it is registered in the EU/US?

Which Australian registrar is the most reliable one? We have two domains that we want / have to register for corp branding / TM protection.

Thanks!

You need an ABN (Australian Business Number) to register a .com.au so if you dont have one then you cant.

On a nother note just as an update www.netfleet.com.au now has 3,126 .au domains listed!

.au is a 'top level cctld' whereas .com.au is a 'second level ccTLD'.

As for your question, no AUDA will not be opening up the .au ccTLD. This issue was finalised in November 2007 with the AUDA boards recommendation being:

"The panel recommends that .au should not be opened up to direct registrations at this time"

Refer to: PDF LINK

Things may change in the future.

I am a new domainer, and looking through these posts I have to place a few comments.

The "so very much inferior" domain name has 5X the traffic of the other one
Check alexa for ramking
Loanconsolidation.com.au has a traffic rank of: 12,738,335
Loansconsolidation.com.au has a traffic rank of: 2,599,374

(to consolidate means "to put together" so, loansconsolidation is makes more sense.)
If you are in the business of selling domain names your skills in domain name values are "very much inferior" as you say it.
What if the owners would like to sell the domain name on your web site? Would you tell them... "your domain name is inferior"?

$127.00 Domain Registration Services (http://www.domainregistration.com.au/)
$140.00 Melbourne IT Ltd (http://www.melbourneit.com.au/)

Good info, js...

Apart from MelbourneIT, anybody have views on which of these would be good, solid Registrars?

Anybody hold any names with any of them? What's your experience?

Thanks.

Remember these are retail prices. If you have any number of domains (50+) you can get better reseller/wholesale deals with the registrars that have high retails prices.

I always recommend people avoid Melb IT. I know people in the web dev/web host industries who are happy with Explorer Domains, Enetica and AussieHQ. I use TPP Internet. Have done so since 2002 when the registrar/registry system was deregulated. The have great prices, a decent online management interface and remarkable customer service.

MD Web Hosting's price is for one year. NetRegistry's is a special offer. IntaServe is the cheapest one and I think they are selling them at a loss, but I am not sure of the wholesale price...
