The inevitable question of death

Just wondering.. how many people here have factored into the equation that they may not be around to renew those precious domain names and have they taken appropriate measures? How many people regard there domain names as assets and protect them as such?

This might be a silly question.. and no I don't _plan_ on dying soon, but I am in the next coming months embarking on a fairly long and involved expedition of sorts.. I mean planes crash.. people get abducted.. killed..die.. get sick.. land in prison. Aside from renewing those precious 1998-1999 dot coms for the next 10 years.. what else do people here do? I've taken care of everything else.. but this question is still somewhat perplexing. On the otherhand, wouldn't it be somewhat selfish to be "hoarding" these names after I'm gone? I'm mean most are still untouched/undeveloped! That's *not* like me at all..

Just to clarify I'm either talking about domain names with *sentimental* value or genuine real value.. not buy-cheap-widgets-online.com and so on..

I did have a scare years ago when I landed in hospital just a week and a bit before one of my names was due for renewal.. lol..always renew in two years blocks now!

Ok.. maybe I've had too much to drink..

Cheers,

Try leaving a will with your solicitor/lawyer along with a key to a bank vault that only a close family member can get hold of...detailing your accounts and passwords.

I just have instructions for login and transfer. I'm dead. They won't get any scam report from me. Domains aren't held in secure locations requiring ID to remove. Just provide your registrar login details and allow them to transfer to their own account.

"The inevitable question of death"

I know it sounds ghoulish...but this is why monitoring the drops is important, as well as bankruptcies.

Myself, I haven't made any plans. I'm still a part-timer with a small collection. When I die they drop.

Ultimately I will be moving the names into a corporate environment and that should protect them in perpetuity or as long as the corp has liquidity.

A couple years ago I had the same "inkling". I sat down with my Fiance (girlfriend at the time) and explained the approximate value range that I would expect the domains to be worth. I even provided her with a colleagues information to contact (to assist in brokering). Obviously I stored all the logins and passwords in a place she had access to.

Truth is - Ive run into this when making offers. I contacted a domain owner, got in touch with his wife, and it turns out he had passed away weeks earlier. she knew nothing about the domain and frankly didn't care (understandably). I didn't push the issue, but it was a valuable domain name.

I don't think you had too much to drink. If you really stop to think about it in the future, it may be more valuable to leave our kids proper domain name rather than anything else.
