Which type of Geo do you think holds more value ?

City

STATE

Country

I am leaving out continents or hemispheres or other esoteric areas.

So city state or country and why do you think your choice is the best geo to buy and also for resale.

Vote in the poll as well

We did this in 2007 http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=380114

i voted for city...more specific and more specific audience vs general state term and country...

country and states are still worthy investments and will do well (i need another geo name for 09 lol)... perks of being late in .tv and dumb grabbing when i first came into .tv

should be great read from the experts in the geo field...good thread ray and want to keep learning what the others say and views on this..

I had this discusion with an un-named member at the Cincinnati dotTV cofference and we concluded that all of the above are authentic GEO's and even stuff like UK24.TV and CoastalCarolina.tv, OH10.TV are GEO's as well.. it depends wetaher or not you are coming at this from a resale or branding point of veiw..im in the branding camp!

sorry i didnt anwser the question, I treid..

Just voted Country, although City comes close after that in my opinion.

In .com domain sales you often see that Country names are sold for higher amounts then City names, although there are some cities that would be very valuable and probably more valuable then the Country, like New York, Las Vegas, but those are exceptions. Especially outside the US Country.tv's are more valuable then City.tv's in my opinion.

Voted city for many of the reasons jeffoverman elaborated. People many times have a specific destination, usually a city and the surrounding metro area.

Geo is about local.

For resale country. (Spain.tv would probally sell more than Madrid.tv)

For development city (Chicago.tv way better fit than Illinois.tv which I must admit since I own Illinois.tv and would sell higher as well on the resale market)

State Geo-a good solid investment especially if a range of $500-$1000 premium range. This also depends on the state whether it's worth more than city.
A small state like Vermont.tv is worth more than any city in the state. A large state like Florida.tv still might be worth more than Miami.tv but harder to develop. Many variables here.

Thanks, Jim

good points jim.. i think all 3 are good investments, geo niche is nice imo.. that being said a well known country name like spain.tv and europe.tv will be worth lots of money for years to come...

with england.tv sale, puts country codes in .tv more in demand..

i do disagree though on miami vs florida though, i would rather have miami.tv and feel price will move higher then florida.. curious what cate.tv says on this since she is down in florida..

i did pick city name and has a lot to offer, but key countrys hold huge values and it all depends on things..

I would also have to agree with John, Country is the most valuable followed reasonably closely by City. State comes last & is worth quite a bit less.

Been following this thread.

Country will always win.

We have israel.tv which is more valuable than say telaviv.tv

With the country .tv you can create sub-sites off that such as telaviv.israel.tv

And use the power of the main country to feed to the city.

cheers

My data indicates that people would rather just type in Telaviv.tv. That would make Telaviv more valuable than the Country because it's more targeted.

subdomains also present SEO challenges. Each subdomain must be SEO-optimized as a unique site meaning for every sudomain, you 2X your SEO work.

But each page should have individual SEO anyway if you really want to thrive. The classic example of using sub domains is about.com which 25% of internet users have been to but may not realize it. All topic areas are set up on sub domains and each page (not just sub domain) has individual SEO. One domain, many sub domains, every page considered an individual entry point. That is why so many about.com topics end up in the top ten listings in search engines and why the web site sold for hundreds of millions of dollars.

Voted country, my opinion is basically the same as John's in post #4.

Jim makes some good points in post #7 too, the same could probably be said for some city/country combinations elsewhere in the world. e.g. Bulgaria.tv would beat any Bulgarian city (IMO) whereas I would much rather own Prague.tv than Czech.tv or CzechRepublic.tv

It can be done. Our AllWedding.com has 200 subdomains Baltimore.AllWedding.com. But to get SEO rankings we had to get backlinks to ALL the subdomains, not just the front page. It can work - definately - but you will need to work hard to make all the subdomains rank well. If you're lazy - don't do subdomains. If you a big bang, and are willing to promote the heck out of every subdomain - then it could yield top reward.

I agree.
Since, from 2007, Google treats subdomain like subdirectory mostly (Sometimes it makes an exception for very popular subdomains), it'll be hard to rank a subdomain independently in the search engine.
Your main site will show up in the search, and the subdomain may be "crowded" right below the main site (indented).

Wouldn't you just get the link juice from the country page flowing through each of the city subs, and back from each city sub to the country page?
