I used to live in Culver City, Los Angeles and we would head to the closest beaches over the weekend which were Santa Monica and Venice Beach. I loved all the craziness of Venice beach and on a couple of occasions went to see the Venice Canals, but was not impressed.
Golds Gym was right on the beach at the time.
People listening to music on their Walkman, while roller skating.
The smell of pot permeating the air.
Restaurants had a sign outside saying: "Barefooted people not allowed in"
Shoe stores had a sign outside saying: "Barefooted people are welcome"

That was Venice beach way back in the mid 70's... From looking at this more recent video it doesn't seem as much fun.
