Newbie here, so I was wondering:

Is the double hyphen a bad thing to have? I'm just curious if people will start going after the "--" when all other .COMs are taken.

And out of curiosity...does anyone here own a name with the Double Hyphen installed?

I would not mind to own --.com or ---.com

These don't and can't exist as the hyphen is not permitted in the first or end positions.

Double Hyphens in the 3rd and 4th positions are a hack for IDN. If try to register these you need to go through an IDN approved registrar and provide a language tag. If you string does not meet the encodement for characters acceptable in the designated language, it will be rejected.

It is likely that in 2009 more domains will be registered starting with xn-- than all other additional dot coms put together. In fact, within two years over half of the dot com registery will probably consist of such domains.

Funnily enough, it must have been possible to have more than two hyphens with two characters at one time. The best example I know of is:

0---------------------0.com

It still works and is forwarded. Pretty interesting site too :)

Matt.

I think it still is, but this one has them in both the 3rd and 4th position which is banned.

think outside the box - - hyphens are cool

Double hyphens can be used like in smileys or emoticons to make an image...

One hyphen is bad enough, why would you ever want 2? For the most part people do not type, or think about typing a hyphen in a web address.

If you are just starting out avoid a few things:
hyphens, numbers, trademarks, anything but .coms, it takes time to get a sense of what makes a name valuable, so just start reading & resist the urge to run out & reg a bunch of names.

welcome to Namepros
There is more to the world than just ENGLISH and America. The hyphen is strong in many regions of the world. Users of the second strongest TLD, .DE, use the hyphen quite extensively. For example, if you type in "autohaus", (in English: car dealership) at Google.de, 7 of the top 10 entries use Hyphens. Some German domains use two or more hyphens. Since the hyphen is a common part of German grammar, it is more natural to use it in domain names than in the USA.

So if you plan to say hyphens are to be avoided, please make sure that you tell people that you are referring to English-websites and English-End-Users. In other countries and languages, they work rather well.

Having a good keywords in domain is helpful. If you can't get a good extension with your keywords then your next best option is to use hyphens. It's not optimal but it's acceptable. It's not going to make your site do better in SERPs over one or two hyphens than if you have none.

Stuff like z-e-r-o.com are worthless for seo imho. hyphenated letters I have never seen come up in serps for their respective keyword.

check out the h-y-p-h-e-n-s thread, there's plenty of evidence there that they rank just as well as their non hyphenated versions
