Double--Hyphens : Are They Worth it?

Junk or worthy of reg fee?

I'm thinking about registering my first double hyphen. It is for great keywords, but I wanted to hear any experiences (SEO, type-in, sales) the NP community might have with these.

When I say double hyphen I mean a domain like Name--Pros.com

I think ONE well placed hyphen can be OK, but I personally would never reg any double hyphen domain, except, possibly, one like C--O.com...

I struggle to see any redeeming value in these domains - by simple human behaviour it is not a likely type-in, as a double-press on that key requires extra movement from the standard key positions. It is also not memorable as people are likely to only type a single hyphen or forget altogether. I'm sure some have sold well in the past, but for anyone except a domainer I can't see why.

IMO they just don't look right, or downright spammy. Even if you are focused on SEO, domains should be user-friendly and not just 'bot-friendly'.

to me hyphens period are extra and only used by those wanting to get a cut off of premium domains, usually

you can't tell me you'd prefer to find the hyphen up in the numkeys its almosts as bad as numbers.

I own 1 and have for years. Had a site developed on it for a long time and did quite well. Now it's mainly a full page of advertisements. I get decide traffic from Yahoo! but little to none from Google.

Sure double hyphs are worth regging. Ask any registrar! But for a domainer, only for the desperate.

We have about 10-12 domains with 2 hyphens. I forget why we thought they would be good, but we only bought them for parking since it seemed like they would work "ok" for that and of course the keyword selection was attractive.

When I just ran the stats for this year and the best one was b--a.net and it earned..... 95 cents since January 1st! Need to get that optimized a little better I guess...

So much for income from parking. What about traffic potential? I re-sorted the list for total unique users for this year and found that mesothelioma--attorney.info was the best one with 387 uniques or about 65 uniques a month.

So I think it is possible to do something with them, but they just are not very good domains in general. If you can find one that's pretty good and find a suck..., I mean a buyer, like gemstar did, then a nice sale can be possible. I would focus more on getting them only for parking, and only if you can optimize and promote the domains. Most parking companies do not allow that. I agree that type-ins should be very, very, very rare.

There are many people who think the title of this thread could be "Hyphens : Are They Worth it?"

So you won't find many people supporting double hyphens except for the mass developers and spammers who just need a reg fee domain, any domain, related to a topic.

From a SEO perspectve, these might do decent but you should never ever ever ever ever EVER expect ant type-in traffic. And expect return visitors to you cool--domain.com to accidently visit cool-domain.com (or cooldomain.com) instead.

I agree. The only way it gets any type-in is there is a typo to the site cash-loans.com. I'm going to put some cash loan info on there and see if Yahoo won't help me out.

I'll let you guys know what comes of it, if anything.

Cash--Advance is gone from .com to .us and so are other similar double hyphens so even though there were a lot of negative remarks (including those in my head) I figured the keywords were so money, it was worth taking a chance on.

I was holding around 12 double hyphen premium keywords domains of mortgage, insurance, software etc

I haven't earned single penny from whole the lot, even tried to sell them here under reg fee. Later I dropped whole 12 domains:td: . So whoever registering such domains with the purpose of parking/resell need to be cautious.

deep-fat-fryer.com? worth regging? If so go get it as its available lol
