The Double Hyphen (--)

Newbie here, so I was wondering:

Is the double hyphen a bad thing to have? I'm just curious if people will start going after the "--" when all other .COMs are taken.

And out of curiosity...does anyone here own a name with the Double Hyphen installed?

One hyphen is bad enough, why would you ever want 2? For the most part people do not type, or think about typing a hyphen in a web address.

If you are just starting out avoid a few things:
hyphens, numbers, trademarks, anything but .coms, it takes time to get a sense of what makes a name valuable, so just start reading & resist the urge to run out & reg a bunch of names.

welcome to Namepros

I have heard rumors that double hyphens help for SEO in terms of boldness for Adwords. May just be a rumor though.

I would not mind to own --.com or ---.com

A hyphen is viewed as a word separator that makes it easier for Adwords to pick out keywords (least I've heard that as well) but I don't think that Langfhir is asking about that angle? It's also not a double hyphen as in -- I believe most refer to a double hyphen as "word-word-word.com"

Hyphens are great for alphabetical directories when - comes before the a. The names at the top get the most visits.

My best one G--A.com currently gets ~500 visits a month because it has a good directory position. Similar philosophy to why so many businesses call themselves names like AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Plumbing has value.

LOL

Double hyphen is the maximum you can have. No more than a run of --

Also - can help search engine optimisation, but in the same fashion, search engines dont recognise, if that makes sense.
Searching with a hyphen pulls up the same results, also, (depends on development) potentially a hyphen name can do as well as non-hyphenated or better.

Quick example, i own 'Sierra-Leone.com' regged in 1996
Now if you search for 'Sierra Leone' on google, it pulls up Sierra-Leone.org on the first page of results, not Sierraleone.com

Now it has a lot to do with the development etc of domain and age, but tbh even that sierra-leone.org is not a great site.

So development is the key as ever, and the amount of competition, but do not be put off by hyphens, sometimes they can make a domain more atractive and easier to read too. :imho:

Nope, don't have any double hyphen names & not really interested in getting any either

I would'nt personally want a name with a -- in it when the hyphens are placed together, I have no idea if it helps in SEO but it does look Butt Ugly.

ie: my--domain.c**

One hyphen placed between 2 very strong keywords is not such a bad thing especially if you want to develop, but they are still a "longer shot" when it comes to selling them and usually the hyphen with drastically reduce the price, although a small amount of people actually prefer the hyphen so it's not always the case either.

ie: Las-Vegas.c**

I have 2 that have a double hyphen in but placed seperately, in this case they were bought for their great keywords and development potential, Not for re-sale.

There seems to be very few reports of sales for names like this, they are basically just a cheap option to go with for many IMO...but good for SEO I beleive.

ie: Abu-Dhabi-Hotels.c**

Yeah double hyphens together look odd in between words, however i like them for N--N.com L--L.com L--N.com etc Only com.

Needless to say, they're all gone, a long time ago.

I mean, for example, M--E.com looks cool imho

I thought c--u.com as in "see you" or "credit union" was worth a $6 roll of the dice :)

I like to hold a few of these. Whilst many domainers do not like them, they offer a very attractive option for some end-users needing just two letters or numbers but without the budget for the LL.com or L-L.com

I have had three sales with these in the past year and that was out of a portfolio of only 10 names. My renewal fees on the rest are now covered for at least three years.

Whilst these names carry more of a risk element, any genre that is making me money is worth holding. I like to stick to all premium combos or combos with obvious meaning to reduce the risk and increase the potential reward.

They don't always have to be acronyms either. Hands up if you would like to own
F--K.com (taken in .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .mobi, .co.uk ...). Adult names are not my bag but that one is a hoot IMO. Not mine unfortunately.

Inspired by this thread, I did a search on L--L.com, N--N.com;

Guess what? Every single one of them is taken! :notme:

You will most likely find that all the L--N.com and N--L.com are taken too. They were yesterday :hehe:

Ha! I just had to check, but I see that Double--Dash.com is already registered. That's one that makes some sense, but pretty worthless still.

Funnily enough, it must have been possible to have more than two hyphens with two characters at one time. The best example I know of is:

0---------------------0.com

It still works and is forwarded. Pretty interesting site too :)

I got M--Y.net a while ago.

Some of the .net are still available I think

I had A--K.com a couple months back. It had dropped. I quickly resold it to a reseller for $40. He sells them all the time for $100 i found out.
