I don't know what domains the author owns but my sales will make his pot investments look meager.

He should look at getting a better portfolio instead of telling people domaining has passed. With the right domains you can still do very well. Problem is so many people now own below average domains. Domaining has not passed, it's like everything else.... either you're good at it or you're not.

.US domains.US domains
its not even about being good or not

its purely about how much time you put into it... just like everything else in life, basically.

if you spend 1 hour a month domaining, you get nothing out of it.

People's opinions many times are based on their own experience. So for him it may have passed. Back in day on the affiliate marketing forums, we had a few times a year, affiliate marketing is dead or dying posts. It usually was for the person making the post.

So, I'm supposed to invest in marijuana stocks instead of domaining? I don't think so ...

The problem is that everyone and there grandma is going to invest into marijuana so the window of opportunity is very narrow. It's like investing in beer today.... the market is stagnant.

You are either in or on your way to the top 0.0001% of domainers or you aren't. If you are not, be or become a profitable hobbyist or live in a developing country with minimal expenses.

If you fit none of the above, you make registrars rich and yourself poorer. Good day.

The linked article did not give me confidence in anything the writer wrote, including the title. It did not deal with domains (except in title) and in this post seemed to be pushing a get rich scheme in the way of penny stock 'newsletters' of old, lacking balance, insight or objective evidence - simply hyperbole.

My own views on the topic @MapleDots asked?
  1. Except possibly for those in very early days or in high profit parking era there never was a domain gravy train.
  2. Overall domain investing profitability is probably similar over the last 5 years.
  3. A very small percentage of domain investors, mainly but not exclusively those handling high premium domains, have done very well and still do so. There is an intuition that is rare and powerful that a tiny elite few have and they consistently obtain good returns.
  4. The majority of domain investors lose money. For most not much loss, and not losing every year. While possibly there is not loss based purely on domains, there certainly is when associated costs and a rate for time is included.
  5. Revenue from associated activities (consultant work, monetized writing, brand protection work, speaking or training, analysis, domain appraisal, development work, etc.) is an important part of the revenue stream of most in it full time.
  6. Those seeking investment returns without work should not be in domains. They should buy index ETFs!

The guy is just trying to get people to invest in a Canadian weed company. No thank you.

Nothing wrong with investing in Canadian weed companies, but calling domain investing a "gravy train" is a bunch of bs- it implies that domaining at some point was easy. It has never been and never will be. Even at the beginning it was not.

However, there is a gravy train for stocks, and that is right at the beginning, when they are selling for pennies. And unfortunately, the ship for Canopy sailed long ago, bye bye.. There are people who bought in at 30 cents a share just a few years ago, and this dude is buying in for >$30? Nothing beats domaining, nothing can be compared to it. Yes run to crypto or stock if you can't handle missing the gravy train and making your own gravy.

Great Topic, to be honest, I regret letting someone tell me that a few years back so I vanished from here shortly after signing up in 2014 but as I get older I see so many people say that stuff about any industry.
The profit train for xxxxx is over blah blah. As others have suggested I have a renewed zest for a couple of reasons I kind of had to out of necessity for a client and started researching again. I also used to have a certification and helped clients in a corporate gig doing PPC management and Analytics but stopped around the same time because of the hype about Ai taking over and market being flooded. I decided to hire a biz coach and he is not even in this biz but was like why would you stop those things still lucrative. Like anything its often a matter of how hard you are willing to work to learn to be better and to master the craft. I was shocked after re-entry into doing AdWords management and SEO for clients in the last 6 months how many people are still so incompetent and have the same certifications I do. I'm finding higher paying and long-term clients again because they can tell with my results I know what the f....Im doing. There will always be a demand if you're not lazy and dont have a weak mind. Ai is cool and all but as many have now seen I am sure in here when using bots to do Appraisals and such its no bueno most of the time. Ai still has a long ways to go to understand especially more complex clients and industry slang.

a bunch of stupid shit IMO, Haters are still well and alive, nothing has changed in that respect, The few that i know are domaining full time as their lively hood are still running excellent volume of sales, restocking inventory takes more capital today than it did 10 years ago, but overall nothing has really changed. i still get offers weekly on my names, although i don't sell much, I am not trying to sell. sales appear to be pretty steady, and inventory is pretty readily available.

Stupid Shit IMO

Reactions tell a story. The fact that so many domainers are so defensive about one guy sharing his opinion about the state of domaining is very telling.

I know I'm getting off the topic here, but man affiliate marketing is a huge chunk of my income for my build out sites these days. It's nearly as much as I make from my full time day job (that I plan to leave soon). For me, that has honestly been a better investment than domaining has as I haven't had to invest money in most cases just some time up front creating content. Domaining isn't too far behind, but it does involve more work in my opinion.

@LeapNames -The same here, It is my four highly developed websites that i make money from, but for me, it has always been that way, website development and multiple streams of income from my sites, I went from adsense , YPN, shareasale, clickbank, and ect. Today, I am a direct affiliate with a few companies, much better, complete transparency.

The few i know who exclusively sell domain names are doing very well, my sites are making steady sales, i am buying domain names, it is all good IMO
