The .COM Version of my .NET domain is one of the top sales this year on DnJournal.com

Hello,

I was scanning down DNJournal.com's top reported sales this year. I noticed that the domain Vapers [dot] com sold in August for $130,000+ and was 50th in the top sales for this year!

I own the .NET version of this name and I've owned it since before the whole 'ecig' boom. I know that it is big business and it's not the only vaping/ecig name that I own.

I own Vapers [dot] net, Vaping [dot] net and Vaping [dot] us.

Does that sale make my domains worth more?

Cheers

I agree with AEP. When you are selling to end users having such examples to give them is a great selling point. Most domainers don't really care about it when they make their offer.

If I were you I would get in selling mode as soon as possible. The .net prices are on the decline from what I can see and read from blogs. And the vaper craze is also going to go out sooner or later. Best to cash in while the craze is on. You have a very good name there.

Point is, you don't own the equivalent dot com.
You can only wish for a higher value of your domains, but will never come close.

No pun intended.

Nice names, so you dont own the .com
You have a great name, the .com sale makes for a good reference point
My biggest sale was a .net
As stated earlier, no better time to sell than now.

Easer said than done.. been in a similar situation, owning the .net of a .com which has sold for $ 40k just 6-7 months ago and instantly contacted the owner offering my .net for 5-10% of the .com sale amount...
just got a "thanks, not interested at this time"..
am still behind that one in case he is bluffing and pulling the patience card but might really be due to decreasing popularity of the .net

Well its really a hit-and-miss ain't it? You never know what the end user (or acquirer of the .com for that matter) would be. One can be after a strong brand presence and secure all the related names around it. The other may well be on the market for the perfect domain for them - nothing more, nothing less.

As you have no way of knowing who is who, your best bet is to be proactive and look for the sale while its still hot. Starting from the one who purchased the .com seems quite reasonable... ;)

Thanks for your thoughts...

I recently acquired eCigarettes.co too, to add to my collection. I reckon as a package these names are real gems.

I'd say use and recognition of vaping is still on the way up, and legal weed can only help. The only probs I see is if serious health side effects are found, and even then, they may be less bad than smoking.

But there will eventually be more regulation - and more research.

I think you're right there! Google trends certainly indicates that the use of 'vaping' is up ... http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=vaping the term appears to be going from strength to strength!

I wonder how much the domains would be worth as a set:

Vaping.net
Vapers.net
Vaping.us
eCigarettes.co

This is what I call the 2nd Fiddle Problem. If the owner of the .com doesnt want the domain name, who else will want to build on a .net to a .com? Think about all that traffic bleeding to the .com.

If you consider brand building, .net's are a disaster.

who else will want to build on a .net
Traffic monetizers who want to make money from confused internet surfers.

If you consider brand building, .net's are a disaster.
There are many popular .nets out there, as listed here:
http://www.entrepreneur.com/net100

You will run into issues, when your domain is some keyword types, and some traffic monetizers would like to exploit your website .net's popularity by building a "me-too" site on the .com domain. Now the other guy would look more legit since he is running on a com.

If you are brand-building, most likely applying for a trademark would be foremost in your mind. You can just UDRP the daylights out of the copycats.

Alien,

Absolutely, quite a few .nets. However do the math on the top 10,000 trafficked websites and my guess is less than 1% are .net

No contest there on com versus net. I'm just saying there are legits who did settle on using a net. I believe that is proof that you "can" be acceptable to society using a net. Just so happens that com is ahead of the game for so long that the brainwash has been very powerful and persistent.

But normally, if i were a legit end-user, i would try to avoid using an identity that confuses customers with another guy using the same name. So if someone is already well-established on the com domain, i'll just try to find another catchy name for myself, instead of getting the net version.
