The Butterfly Effect: Changed The World Lately?

Ever wonder about the consequence of your decisions throughout your lifetime and how they may have changed your life, someone else's life, or, on a grander scale, the destiny of many people?

Did you make the right decision or the wrong one? Is there any such thing as right or wrong?

They say the mere act of a butterfly flapping it's wings can start a chain of events that may result in a tornado many miles distant.

While the butterfly does not cause the tornado, the flap of its wings is an essential part of the initial conditions resulting in a tornado. [source]

I like to think that every breath we take has some special significance, every act, no matter how small, may change the world. It could be a word of encouragement or an admonition.. a decision to cross a street.. or not.

Then sometimes, I think.. we're right where we need to be. That I'm writing this and you're reading it because everything we've ever done led to this moment fo a reason. Or not.

What do you think?

Have you changed the world lately?

Action = Reaction

Now the question is, what started the ACTION!

Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try. Our minds and eyes are to small to see the bigger picture.

We fall under REACTION! Meaning as humans we can only REACT not ACT!

If we could ACT - then this world would be a world free of SIN!

It's funny I found this thread, I was talking to my manager at work today about something very similar, We were late shipping out something to a fellow in Kelowna, BC and I went on this rant about how we made the driver wait an extra 15 min and how if we had things done on time he wouldn't be here of course my manager doesn't really care if we are little behind some days with our work it happens, but yeah I told him that by keeping that driver an extra 15 min we may have killed someone the next tomorrow , I can't recall it word for word but it went something like this.
By keeping the driver an extra 15 min we could have made the driver sleepy and on his way to the depot he falls asleep and causes an accident, which makes the product (it's a bunch of skids of construction materials) not arrive on time so the person receiving it is waiting but the shipment doesn't arrive on time so he goes back to the top of the construction site (it's a new tower they are building) and then finally the shipment arrives he sees the container come, so he starts to walk to the lift trips over a cord falls off the building and dies and all because we were 15 min late sending a shipment and it goes on and on, so to answer your question I think every little thing we do in life does and will always have a great affect on a scale we can't even began to comprehend.

Very thoughtful post, Dave. Screw the economy, let's talk philosophy.

We can't really know what effect we have on people.

It's like the peasant whose father passed way. His brothers all got nice pack horses in the inheritance. But he only got a donkey. That was bad luck.

Then, one day, he traded the old donkey to somebody who desprately needed one for a beautiful Arabian stallion. Then the donkey was good luck.

Then, while he was riding the stallion one day, it threw him and badly broke his up so he couldn't walk properly. Now it was bad luck again.

Then, a year later, war broke out and all able bodied men were drafted and sent to die on the front. He was passed over because of his condition. So the donkey was a good deal again.

After the war, he was arrested and accused of being a spy because he didn't fight at the front. Now it was a bad deal again.

After only a month in prison, there was a bloody revolution. He was released and considered a hero because the previous regime had thrown him in prison. His new status enable him to marry a beautiful wife. Now the donkey was good luck again.

A year or so on, his wife fell in love with another, and tried to poison him...

It goes on. The game ledger isn't set until the day you die. Then it's passed on to the kids.

Some great replies.. :)

Then again, are they really "your" decisions ar are we simply led to believe that as we act out some grander scheme in the play of life? Is it predetermined or do we really have free will?

We are given the power to make our own choices! Our power is limited!

We are the symphony of the universe! We shape the universe with our choices.

Off Topic:

Creator of Wisdom has given all his creations a small brain to make its own choices!

A cockroach is born with the ability to reproduce and find food the second it's born. Wisdom comes in many sizes. It is not aware of our existence, yet we look right at it! The same could be said of Humans, something bigger then us "NOT GOD" is looking at us the same way!

How do you expect us to question something we can't see!

I can relate to your post, Domainace, because when I left NY to go to Virginia Beach, it seemed like a downturn in my life but then I might never have met my (now ex)girlfriend and ended up out here (which has turned out to be a good thing). I left my last job after 4 years which seemed a mistake at the time but now work online instead (which is a good thing).

I just keep getting the sense that no matter what decision I make, things will ultimately turn out because it was the decision I was supposed to make because I am always right where I should be. Like an actor who always hits his mark.

Dave, it really helps to think that way when something crappy happens, too. The threads that connects our lives are so narrow at points, huge events hinge on some chance meeting, or a decision to stop for coffee on the way home.

I have have the wife and kids I have because a former girlfriend wanted to go to the place where my future wife worked. I met the former girlfriend because I knew her former boyfriend, and ran into her at a cafe after they broke up. So that guy is responsible for my entire personal life now.

And the kicker is....he has no idea what influence he's had!

But you see my point? Was it our decisions that made these things happen or are we just players in a scripted scene?

Say you're developing a computer game: easier to make your characters follow predetermined paths within set limits or to allow them free rein in the game?

I think if I were God, I'd create the universe from a single perspective with the illusion that many perspectives existed. I'd create a limited environment that existed only when/where required. There'd be no such thing as free will, just the illusion that free will exists. Why create reality when the illusion suffices? Why have real stars when you can have twinkling lights in the sky that are just as convincing?

I have been making wrong decisions in my entire life, and all the times I have made a promise to myself that the next time around, I would live a responsible and mature life, and yet I cannot do it. Its just that I feel so empty and alone in this world. Its like nobody ever expect great things from me, and in this process I lost my determination to move forward.

I think the important thing is to "go with the flow" and live your life for yourself first. No one will expect great things from you unless you first expect them of yourself.

Meanwhiole, you're reading this thread for a reason.. learn from it and make it count.

You can't ever lose hope.. it's always right where you left it last.

You are not the one making the decisions! It's your Ego! The fact that you are aware of your mistakes, that shows that you are connected to your real face (Your Soul) The EGO in all of us likes to control us. Their is a easy way to detach yourself from the multiple ego's in you that has made all these bad mistakes you talk about. Get one thing straight, it is not you! It is your ego that is programmed in our DNA from our ancestors.

Visit the link below and read about Elkhart Tolle, purchase the book and it will change you life. It's never to late!

You are not at fault! Put an end to your EGO's Negative Power which feeds off anything it can attach itself too!
