Apologies, I know we have the ongoing Political debate thread. but for me and 100's of millions of others throughout the the World, this is a big one. I'm British breed , born and resident. But even I have the sweats over your forth coming US elections. I'm not trying to side-step the excellent debate already in progress on NP. Rather just awaken our fellow Yanks over the real-world apprehension of your up-and-coming election. Trumps words would resonate with the Brits more than you could imagine. His pointing out of the (then, though no longer in existence pipeline for energy from Russia) Hit right home, How can we on earth expect America to defend Europe , while at the same time renege on our 2% defence commitment (Not Britain, may I add) Cheap fuel from Russia while expecting America to be a World defender doesn't wash.

I consider myself a right leaning socialist, It comes from having a secure pension and investments and wanting to pay my dues as they fall due. However, I'm flummoxed as to how the right of US society can associate Social leaning policy as a leftist leaning (even described as Communist thinking)

I truly wish our fellow state-siders the very best. My hoped for thinking is that Trump will never enact his spoken rhetoric and the World can breath a sigh of relief over a Democratic victory, either way Europe will have have to rebalance its act.

I truly hope America stays as the Worlds Statesman, Nothings perfect but it as far as a three dominating world powers go it keeps a balance that we all would be lost without.

At this point it doesn't matter who wins. Always remember you're voting for the best liar. Would like to see a woman in office though.

Not my thinking, though I agree with you on the best side-show. Black, Asian, White female or male matters not. Some are built for stability (even gradual change) others are compelled towards immediate change. I believe history points out nothing bares more fruit than stability of thinking and action.

I appreciate America has far more pressing, home grown issues that are going to be the deciders in this election, I just wanted to put in, what I believe are the European awakenings

Thoughts on UN?

Would be interesting to see if US follows into the populism wave around the world or can withstand it.

Considering how societies around the world have been polarized in the last 10 or so years, hoping it is a peaceful and safe transition regardless of who wins.

Sadly It's already become a piecemeal brigade, Not really fit for purpose in this day and age. It had a mandate and had influence in the past. UN charters don't count for much these days. Purley for the wordily in imagination and reality. I doubt any country in the modern age would even understand its obligations. It's there for reference and quotation when it suits. It can be fixed and rewritten, but will probably take another World war to re-enact itself

Indeed a relevant thought. I can't see anything wrong with a period of introspective management and thought. I can see myself agreeing with Trump in more ways than I want. My personal scare is the apparent divide between the North and South, almost like there is a new division in the country. I know it is not as clear cut as county lines, but it is moving that way.

As an outsider, I find myself thinking of rednecks and an affluent northerners as an imaginary divide (or maybe real) Managing the thoughts and aspirations of such a vast 220 million population country requires something more than singular endeavour. We in the UK have the recognised, north/south divide but slowly it is being addressed. To my mind the USA is still the greatest and most gifted country in the world. (I love ever visit)

I do think, however wins the election America will have a period of introspective thinking and revaluation, that's good and about time. The second world war and the cold war aren't dictates to anything meaningful. just lessons , almost forgotten.

God Bless America.

I appreciate your perspective, but itโ€™s worth noting that attitudes like yours contribute to why we declared independence from Britain long ago. I think itโ€™s important for us to focus on fixing our own country while you address your own issues. Letโ€™s both work on what we believe is best for our nations! Trump 2024!

I thank everyone for tolerating my thoughts and scares. A good understanding of astrophysics really does put everything into perspective. for evermore ;)

Britain was never any good at controlling anything that it couldn't bribe or subterfuge the masses, never going to happen with a nation of inventiveness and spirit.

I've learnt so much about American, and French, Italian and Irish contributing history over recent years. doesn't make me proud to be a Brit one bit

The fact that the US has ended up with a choice between those two should tell us everything we need to know about how screwed politics has become. You can't tell me there aren't other more qualified people out there.
