Hi everyone! The 3D market appears to be exploding! Record takes at the box office by movies such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland and the announcement this week of the new 3D TV which is set to hit markets shortly have helped buoy interest in 3D multimedia platforms. Even the major American television network NBC has jumped in and will be broadcasting the NCAA Final Four basketball games in 3D!

A direct beneficiary from this renewed interest and greatly improved 3D technology is the domain business. Some of you had foresight many years ago and reg'd great names early on. Others (myself included) have only become aquainted with 3D domaining more recently, but see the huge potential this market has opened up for domainers.

Let this be the place for you to show off your 3D domain names. Ask for opinions, marketing strategies or even an appraisal or guesstimation of value. Also, feel free to post any relevant news releases/articles related to the 3D industry.

I will start the thread off with a few of my own reg's..

3DHighDefinitionTV.com (also have plural)
3DHomeEntertainment.co.uk
3DHometheaters.org
3DStreamingMovie.com
3DVancouver.com
3DWhistler.com

Saucey. ;)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
^ If anyone in this thread makes a dime on 3d names, you're probably the only one, for the record, given the names you have, although I don't think even that's a slam dunk. At least you have a shot, though, while the rest of these folks are just lighting money ablaze.

... and I'm going to guess that any number of the "better 3d Names" you have were aftermarket buys and not hand registrations?

See, *that's* what the n00bs don't get.
"Good domains" are finite- be it within a particular topical niche, or just domain names in general. There is a limit to 'what's good'. Everything beyond that point is worthless and it's only names that fall in the 'good' category that are resalable.

The beginners modify and contort basic tenets of human comprehension to convince themselves that whatever abstract nonsense they just registered for $7.49 at Godaddy is going to be of great value to someone else, even though really, it never will be.

I only bought these 3 from existing owners

3DMovie.net
3DChannel.com
Touch3D.com
Cam3D.com

The rest were hand reg's

Giles, looking at your signature you clearly have some good 3D related domains. Most of them make sense and have some type of potential use at least.

What Jaco said is dead on, there are a finite amount of good domains. It is why Candy.com sells for $3M and 3-DCandy.mobi is worthless. To be a successful domainer you need domains that buyers might want, which means quality domains.

The vast majority of my sales are to end users, so I have a good idea about what type of domains actually sell. I am not really a "flipper" like many domainers - I make fewer high quality sales to end users.

If people are truly interested in 3D domains they are better buying higher quality domains on the aftermarket than handregging a bunch of low quality domains.

Brad

I dont protest to be an experienced domainer, but I can hopfully tell a good domain from a bad domain...please let me know if I cant lol...I haven't sold one 3D yet, but thats mainly because I haven't approached anyone to try and sell and I have rejected all offers I have received.

There are often exceptions to the general rule:

3DHomeMovies.com not bad for a recent hand reg... (IMHO)

From an outsider to this thread, it seems like everyone is trying to register 3d"anything"."anyextension" just so the next domainer can't. Are you guys/girls flipping any of these? I visited your site 3ddomainnames and couldn't believe the list of fresh reg 3d domain names. How are you doing at selling them? Good I hope. I have a few so I am on board with 3d, but many of these posted in the thread are far fetched (3dSarahPalin dotcomD-:). I guess my biggest question is what your buy/sell ratio is and are you making your investment back? (unless some of you are in it for the hunt only, which is fine also)

It needs to be remembered this soon to be popular technology is not going to make anyone big bucks this week (except perhaps d-k) i know giles is happy to wait for it to become mainstream and so am i
, 3ddomainnames has mentioned to me no one is searching for 3d names yet so it would be a bit unfair to judge him or his success on something that to many is just beginning ? I happily purchased 3dtv.tv earlier this year to go with my 3dtvs.tv both exist with the wait and see attitude. And if this whole thread is judged by 3dsarahpalin , well that is just crazy

Some one earlier on in this thread mentioned AR (augmented reality) i did in fact reg arwebcams and ar##xcams as a result of reading up a bit on ar , i happily regged arglasses.com.au because i believe this is of value down the road and with some of these names here the value could be down the road a bit

I find the buy dog.net and resell dog.net and then buy dog.net style of domaining to be quite boring , i think some others here do as well and i say good luck them if that's the path they choose

I did exactly that a few years ago and with that name, Dog.net. :gl:

But for me diversification is the name of the game. I have made a few sales and dollars by using that philosophy. I have about 5 3D related names.

Those that say they are solely in the 3D niche usually mean they may have one or two potentially good names along with a large number that will drop at the first opportunity.

3D is a happening technology but simple do a search at Sedo for 3D and just see how many names are up for sale and then think about how many potential buyers there are out there.

It's not difficult math- go for quality, quantity just maxes out your credit card much quicker with less likelihood of it being topped up from sales.

i'm serious.. not trying to argue with you.. i mean, if you want us to all listen to you, you need to explain to us why we should... and what your idea's are.

OK, another friendly advice :)

You registered 3-d Porn.co.uk & 3-d Sex.co.uk. Altough those domains sounds nice, they are not, imho. Why?
- Adult domain/sites dont go well with .co.uk
- Dash hurts
- Dash on the wrong place hurts even more
- Will not get typeins, and hard to brand

- You paid $40 for those domanis. For that price I recently bought on aftermarket much better 3d adult .com domain*, 5 or 6 yrs old, with traffic (which looks natural and targeted for now). If you put couple $$ more in the basket, you could buy even better domains on aftermarket.

Above scenario could apply to other names in this thread also.

* Will not discuss name at this point, site is under development.

Just typing "3dtv" on sedo and my search returned 869 matching domains.

Many of them are ["word" on 3dtv.com]

I think that is a good idea...just to recheck what you have purchased and flipping the weaker ones.

When I started back in 98 I spent X amount of $$$ and flipped a few domains. I made back the money I had put in... thus making the portfolio of domains free..That is what I and many do.

There is no point spending hundreds of dollar's and waiting in debt...come renewal time you will end up in a panic sell.

Good luck Buddy :)

Still cant work out the bluray 3d thing, all over the internet they are classed as 3dblurayplayers but in some other areas they are being worded as bluray3dplayers, I have some domains both way round, I cant understand why people are saying 2 different ways. I know it still means the same but in domaining terms it is essential to get the proper way or is it?. Bluray 3d players sounds correct to me as it is a 'bluray disc' and a '3d player' and since it will be called a 3d player it does make sense. What does everyone else think, or do you even care?

P.S. And please dont go on about trade marks!

The inaugral 3D Gaming Summit took place in LA a couple days ago. The vids are now online so enjoy:
3D Gaming Summit | GamerLive.TV (note the .TV -GamerLive.TV was a sponsor-)

FEATURED KEYNOTES:

Jon Landau,
Producer of the
Academy Award®-winning
feature film Avatar

Paul W.S. Anderson,
Writer, Director,
Producer of Resident
Evil Franchise, AVP, Event Horizon

Phil Eisler,
General Manager
of 3D Vision, NVIDIA

Josh Greer,
President & Co-Founder RealD

=====

Note: this follows the first 3D Entertainment Summit -held in Sept., and is produced by the same team. While I live in LA, I did not attend either... though some of my friends did. From a 3D domainer perspective put these on your radar for next year as they will likely be the biggest concentration of top-tier 'end users' from across the industry.
