I searched and there were few if any threads about TEL. I am curious if there are any positive benefits. It looks like it was a neat idea at the time that never went anywhere and has since been abandoned.

One that I found interesting *for personal use* caught my eye, so I bought it. I am pretty sure I will be requesting a refund, so I don't need to be scolded and made fun of for not having looked into it before I did my reg, I was tired and just wanted to be done with stuff for the day, I had another purchase at the same time.

For anyone who still holds TEL, are the directory, SEO and Geo benefits still applicable? It appears there is a very small niche that are still active users of TEL, but it is dwindling.

Thank you for your kind consideration.

In my honest opinion, I'd stay clear of any .TEL domains, I've almost never seen one sell at auction.

Appreciate all replies, I had already started the refund process, given the former hype, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some benefit I was missing.

Early 2000s I was a Vanity 800 number agent, and in the 90s I did PAGER sales, which had 800 #s available and voice mail and was cutting edge at the time. All my current phone numbers I am ever so particular about, I'll pay extra to get "good" numbers, I use multiple forwarding numbers and they all have patterns. So I think I just figured out why I was curious about it!

Ironically, .tel has little to do with telephony.

You don't have to worry about checking your inbox for inquiries.

According to https://namebio.com/, little .tel domains have been sold. They have been sold around mid 4 figures and below.

Thanks,
Brandon

@Kate - I was thinking the exact same thing after I got it.

@dordomai - hilarious : smile :

@Brandon.Domains - very old sales there as well all but one before 7/2011

My refund is complete, no hassle, was name.com so I wasn't worried, plus even though it was only $11, a good lesson for me since I am new, that $11 could get me something much better.

Also interesting stuff I came across while searching
Ditch Your Phone Number for a URL With Toky

Pretty dated article, in tech terms, there must be someone else who has improved this

And the opposite - turn a URL into a Phone Number

The best .tel aftermarket public sale is telchina.tel for $4992 at Sedo around 2010. And the domain is not developed maybe bought by investor.
I think .tel owner should market it for popularity.

There are no directory, geo or seo benefits for this domain extension, just like all other gTLDS

Granted, they were intended for a special purpose:

Thanks,

I find in fact this something very interesting : The dottel-extention had very interesting
advantages : It's like the yelllo pages of the internet.
If you register your name.tel => And you phone, your-website-URL, and current address, where you work etc... In the meantime you put on your businesscard or your personal card, with your dotteldomain. And when you move, or you get a new phonenumber, etc... you just change the info on your dottel-domain-website (just filling in the information no HTML-knowledge necessary at all). !!
And there's so much else you can with it.==> You can find info here ==> https://www.telnic.org/
