Submit URL to the big search engines

How do i sumbit my URL to the big search engines? What are the links to these submission sites?

What is a Google sitemap? What is the benefit of this?

Agreed. Don't do the submit thing. Just link it somewhere (preferrably not somewhere where it's under text like "Advertisements" or "Paid Links").

Why recommend against submitting? There are a few free ones out there that are at least worth the 5 minutes to do it, right? And places like dmoz.org, etc? More can't be bad, right?

I would recommend submitting to DMOZ, but DMOZ is a directory, not a search engine. Submitting to directories is worth while.

In terms of the search engines, which this is about, (Yahoo, Google, MSN), from experience, I've had better luck getting indexed quickly by putting links to my new sites on older ones than submitting. I've found submitting to take longer.

Wow...that www.isumbitfree.com is an awesome site! It's really easy and smooth! I think it's too good to be true, usually, confirmations and many other issues hinder you from submitting successfully, but this site has a quick response to your submissions. I hope all submissions are this easy...

No such thing as a dumb question, at least that what my teachers used to say.

I meant, link to the web site which is not indexed from a site that is indexed (preferrably one that gets crawled by the SEs often). If you have another site that is indexed, put a link to your new site on it. Otherwise, buy a link to it from another site (I'm sure some people here could get you a decent link for pretty cheap, myself included).

Getting linked to sites already indexed by top SEs is usually the best way to get your site indexed. Submitting your site maually to SEs will take up a lot of time and results will be slow too.

Google Sitemap is a service designed for website owners which enables spiders to proactively and automatically crawl information about your website to Google.
