I have an old email account from god knows when. I never really use it anymore, i just happen to still have the account open w/my cable company. I really should close it out, but i do get usefull email every now and then.

Anyway, over the course of the years, my account has been victim to supposed 'legitimate' spam…you know, where they say you opted in at some point, and if you want to opt out to just click a link and *kapoof*, you'd be off their list. don't get me wrong, i wasn't getting hundreds of spam per day, just enough to cause a consistent annoyance. These where advert. spam, you know...for lasik, 'legal steroids', online universities....

Well, early this month, i said 'enough is enough'. I'm going to remove myself from their list. Maybe this was a dumb thing to do, i don't know. I'm not a total dimwitt when it comes to safety and the internet, but i figure, 'i'll get myself removed from their list, and if i get more ads i can complain' I don't know, made sense at the time.

I click the 'remove me' link on the 'legit spam' to be lead to a marketing firms, apologizing for the 'inconvience' and promising to remove me from their list. Well, since going on my little email rampage, i'm happy to say i have not recieved any ads for life insurance or penis enlargement.

But I have started getting another kind of spam that i never got before.

"You're email has won the UK lottery!"
"I'm a highly decorated diplomate from some country. I'm dying left my fortune to you"
" "...no message, just an attachment with what I can only deduce is a virus waiting to eat my computer

I NEVER got those emails before unlisting my address with some of the legit spam I was getting.

Some of the marketing firms i deleted my account from include:
FidelityMedia
ExpressPipelines
Lyris ListManager to name a few.

SO, i'm left to conclude/wonder several things.

A) These are legit marketing companies, who's email system has been compromised some how.
B) Some of these marketing companies are not legit, and just a front to get your email address....so when you hit 'Un-subscribe Me' You're actually giving scum buckets your email addresss...ie, the whole thing is a phishing scam for email addresses.
D) Marketing agents sell email addresses of the recipents that elect to opt out. After all, they promise not to sell your info, but once you opt out, how would you know that THAT marketing firm sold your info?
C) It is by some strange coincedince that, after 5 years of no scam spam, I'm recieving these scam spam the same time i opted out of the annoying spam.

I don't know, what do you think?

I've found that some spam that you get includes a Remove Me link as an enticement to get you to click so they can confirm they have a working email.. if it's in your Spam folder and you didn't sign up for it, sometimes the best thing to do is just delete it without ever opening it. I don't open anything that goes into my Spam folder unless I recognize it got sent there by mistake. I use Gmail and their filter is one of the best around.

I use catchall E-mail addresses so I have been able to determine that certain forums I was a member of have had their DB compromised... clearly hacked sites are a source for addresses to be spammed :td:
