Basically I was looking forward a certain domain name and it wasnt available for the .com version. When I typed it in the browser I got a parked domain that says This domain has expired......etc.

Accoding to godaddy "Underlying Registry Data" the domain had the Expiration Date: 05-jan-2012 I really if this is a grace period but I need to make sure I get the domain if it doesnt get a renewal.

So, what are the right steps to take in order to catch this dropping domain?, any service or tool alert will be helpful.

That name should be available at godaddy auctions soon if it's registered with godaddy (verify registrar). Then you will have a chance to bid on it and obtain it before it's deleted.

So, what are the right steps to take in order to catch this dropping domain?

There is no dropping and no catching at this stage. It doesn't work that way. What is happening is, the domain is still under the control of the registrar during the first 45 days and the registrar auctions the domain somewhere. That somewhere depends on where the domain is registered.

If the domain is registered with Godaddy, then it is auctioned at godaddy. There will be a link on that parking page. Check this screenshot:

If it expired on 5 January 2011, the auction most likely began two days ago and it will last 9 days more.

Is it registered at godaddy?

By the way, during those 45 days the whois will show the domain as renewed for one more year. So you will see the expiry date as 5 jan 2012, but this is an automated renewal that applies to all expired domains during the first 45 days. In other words, don't trust the whois. Ignore it.

GoDaddy can't even catch its own domains via backorder.. Then, when you do backorder, they force it to auction regardless of your backorder (even if you're the only one that has backordered it). Not to mention, they seem to have a problem with employees (past and present) *cough* bidding on domains.
