Spamming in welcome center...

Does anyone else feel the constant spamming of the welcome center by members "welcoming" new members is getting a little out of hand?

Take a look at this:

Pic deleted for stretching out the page

It's the same people just copying and pasting the same message over and over again in every thread. I don't know why they're doing it... Maybe for the NP$ (not sure if that forum awards NP$) or just to boost their post count, but it looks really tacky. :imho:

Anyone else feel the same way?

Last I checked, Welcome posts don't award NP$ or add to post counts. Maybe those members want to be friendly and act as a resource to new members. Annoying? Sometimes, but it's good to welcome new members. The posters have nothing to gain by posting in that forum.

EDIT: Looks like my post count increased when I posted in there -- guess I was mistaken. I'm sure some kind of daily post limit in that forum can be imposed.

why people would want to post more? Is there a price to win?

I don`t think so.

a limit sounds good. it's a pain to see half a page of welcome center posts when i'm browsing through "new posts". i'd go for a weekly limit of 10 or so.

(is there any way to omit certain forums when browsing "new posts" ?)

-RJ- can take a certain section out of new posts.

i was wondering if it's possible for members customize what shows up on their own accounts (without having to trouble rj) when they click "new posts". for example, someone might want to omit new posts from the .mobi, break room, programming, etc.

Create your own suggestion thread... :| ;)

That's a great idea actually. :tu:

i think most want more posts. i've seen this happen alot. you could set it to don't add post limit but then the new member misses out and then has no post count.
maybe a limit is good.

i am not for any limits as it will deter people who truly wish to welcome members

i suggest -
1. disabling post count in that section
2. removing those threads from the "Searches" just like NP$ BST section is

Incorrect, my friend. :)

As you can see here, Vlad is selling his signature space for NP$. The more posts, albeit spam, the more potential backlinks and the more money he can sell signature links for.

Just though I would point that out... ;)

indeed, it's not really spamming but indeed how more posts how more people can ask to sell their signature. It's a tactic and it's to admins if they are going to do something about it.

In fact when want to buy a sig space i always look where members post. If it's mostly in welcome center i will for certain not buy his space.

We've actually Warned people for Welcoming members Already banned in the past - We left the threads open- And of course no one read or even looked.

Here's a good example as well : http://www.namepros.com/welcome-center/368669-new.html This guy opened 2 Different welcome threads so I merged them ..... Several people just posted the Exact same Welcome in both threads ...... :|

Yes - It's a bit spammy in there.

:imho: The welcome messages should be as unique
as each new member is!

Thanks Mark for this informative yet very funny thread of spammy threads. And of all things that I needed a real good laugh for. You brought a smile and tears. Thanks

And I will try to keep in mind of, or whenever I get around to welcoming ppl, not to do spam a thread to the same person with the same response.

I know they had the same issue over at Digitalpoint and they run off of a Vbulletin as well. They did something that your post count will not go up while posting in the welcome area. And in the freebie area and a few other areas you can not do a + rep in those areas.

I think a moderator needs to be placed there full time - even though i welcome members myself :hehe: just to ensure theres not loads of spam all the time :)

I believe I once suggested a perfect candidate for that: mellowmasher
Most users at that time felt that one was not needed.
Perhaps now is the right time?

As for me, I don't ALWAYS leave welcome messages, but I try to. It definitely helps people feel welcome. And my messages are always unique. Might as well spend the 40-odd seconds typing a unique welcome message opposed to pasting and then waiting for a while!
