A lot of my guestbooks have been spamed by some morons from Russia, but for no apparent reason.

Basically it goes like this:
Nice site! Color scheme no bad... Add spam protect and be happy ! Random code =454

At least 16,600 pages have been spammed like this:
http://www.google.com/search?q="add+spam+protect+and+be+happy"

It's not link spam because they don't have any link...

Any idea why they're doing that?

Sort of like Blog virii/worms... doing nothing productive but annoying

Probably cause they are sad, and have nothing else better to do in their lives ;)

One could only speculate, but it could be to post either links or email addresses. The links are self expanatory as link spam for search engines. The mail links may be to get people to email them and collect valid emails for spamming later or selling them.

The thing that troubles me is that there's no link and the E-mails are fake.

maybe it is just a quality assurance of testing an automatic script?

Hope not, that'd mean we are seeing the tip of an iceberg, would be horrible.

try to ban that person's IP ...

that might helps

I already banned any IP that remotely resemble that one, but I think most webmasters do know about this yet.

*do know = don't know

Two possible reasons come to mind:
1. They are trying to get people to search for "spam protect" manually (made me do it and I haven't even been spammed ;) )
2. They are trying to make to people to submit a spam report on "spam protect" - if it works this would be a nice way to get your competition!

That's my guess, too. They'll probably come back later when they figure out that it's working.

If the guest book has a link the spam bot will put a link in it. If you don't see any links then you have probably just managed to only look at spammed sites that don't let you post a link

The IP is actually Dymanic...

Yeah my first thought was that they are tagging guestbook pages that allow automated posting so some software can come back and do the real deal later.

lol the russian spammers i have had contact with are mental, i would guess this is just some sort of test. Either that or someone who has no idea what they are doing has got their hands on a script.

there are thousands of automated guessbook and blog spam bots around already, this is nothing new.

True there are already tons, but none have the power of raiding all guestbooks yet.

IMO Whoever does this kind of spamming should hanged then shot. It does nothing except wasting our resources.

I had to remove the "Add a Song" and the "Request a Song" from my Music Lyrics site, I was getting about 50 junk submissions a day... A real pain in the a$$

I am going to add them back in with a numerical validation script, jsut can't seem to find the time to do it...

Some people just make me wonder, if you have the talent to do that kind of stuff why not put it to good use and get a real job...

:(

I have one word for all of you:

CAPTCHA

Actually, it's 11 words: "completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart".

Ah, if only spammers could meet this end , the world would be such a nicer place.

for the same reason that they become professional crackers or phishers, because there are no "real" jobs for them in their country.
