...is a mind numbing experience. Anyone have any tips or tricks to speed up the process?

No, sorry. I too spend hours searching.
I think that's just the way this game goes:)

It's going to take a little while no matter what, lol..But, proper filter usage will definitely speed the process up ;)

Excel is the key! With proper usage you can make drop lists a mere drop in the bucket of time. I normally can go through them all in about 1 hour drops, expired, auctions and much more.

Excel has a lot of problems with raw drop list files (primarily size)

Better to write real code, imho.

I don't know if it's changed w/ Excel or not (approx. 65k limit), but Quattro Pro will do a million rows.

Only search niche categories/keywords to keep your sanity. Text editor with good 'find' tools. Use the windows f3 key.
Use keyword notification tools. What else is there?

Here's a humbling thought.
An active searcher can easilty average 500 hrs a year.
Not counting registration costs, a return of $4,000 a year is required to just get the equivalent of minimum wage.

I normally square up the list before dumping it raw into excel...Remove dates, anything but.com, etc. I have setup many filters in excel that prevent it from doing as you say "having problems". The simple fact remains it's one of the easiest and fastest ways to prune, trim, and find gold :)

Real code isn't needed and if your not a programmer excel is the way to go.

I agree it is easy enough with Excel, I have no idea how to code. I have been removing numbers, dashes etc too. I find scanning quickly and not miss anything while scrolling in Namedrop involves just way too much eye hand coordination and definitely is cramp inducing. I like the excel pages for just a simple click to replace all the domains in view with the next ones and amazed how many times faster it has been.

Filtering for .com only, then "does not contain .com" after in a second run through is a great way to prioritize and keep the desiterd search image clear and distraction-free.

If you want to filter by domain length, use the following in the Custom AutoFlter drop down, set to Equals and ????.com for 4 letters, as each ? represents a single letter.
