Hi all,
I have a (com) name that I intended to make a business with, and after buying the name I went and locked it on FB. But then when I went to do the same on Twitter, it's taken. The last posts from the user to the account are from almost 3 years ago. My question, could I trademark the name to force it turned over to me? Maybe Twitter would just hand it over to me simply because it is basically an abandoned name.? Should I just forget about it, being they owned the account prior to my owning the com? A fake name that would fit as an example for this discussion would be spacetours. Rather broad, in other words. Anyone have an experience in this, or any ideas?
Thank you...

you cant just take it, someone else got it first, is there anyway to contact the twitter owner and try to get it that way?

just because you trademark it doesnt mean you get everything related.

if it is indeed not being used, then hopefully they hand it to you, that would be your best best, be friendly, explain the situation and try to work out a deal that way, be prepard to offer a token of good will as well :)

Twitter do hand over accounts with no posts, so it's worth a try to email them and ask, might get lucky if it's only a few posts.

Thanks. I am going to first try to get Twitter to help. Then, if unsuccessful, I will try to work an agreement with the user. I appreciate the input.

I think you should focus on finding your own name rather than trying to find loopeholes to take away someone elses. I have a young daughter that I made facebook, twitter and other accounts for when she is older.

Now I got to worry about slugs trying to take them because they want them more? Thanks for the warning. I'll be sure to update them so someone like you can't take something I was smart enough to plan for and obtain.

How do you know that, through personal experience or read somewhere?

LOL, what a nut you are. You need to relax a bit. You throwing named like slug isn't to appealing, lol. The account has been abandoned for 3 years, if you failed to comprehend this from the first post to this thread. And yes, you should read the Twitter rules, there is a 6month abandonment rule. I guess they don't really like people like you just locking usernames up for ten years down the road. And besides, the business name I am speaking of is not of a personal nature. So, relax... and your welcome for the information. Twitter's words now follow,

"What is Twitter's inactive username policy?
We encourage users to actively log in and use Twitter when they register an account. To keep your account active, be sure to log in and Tweet (i.e., post an update) within 6 months of your last update. Accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity. Please use your account once you sign up!

How does Twitter determine inactivity?
Inactivity is based on a combination of tweeting, logging in, and the date an account was created. Please note that you may not be able to tell whether an account is currently inactive, as not all signs of account activity are publicly visible.

What if a potentially inactive account is using my registered trademark as its username or account name?
If your trademark is being used on an account that appears to be inactive, please see Twitter's trademark policy for additional information. If you need to submit a report, be sure to provide all of the trademark registration information outlined in our trademark policy.

What if I have a request for a username from an account that looks inactive, but I don't have a registered trademark?
We are currently working to release all inactive usernames in bulk, but we do not have a set time frame for when this will take place. If a username you would like is being used by an account that seems inactive, you should consider selecting an available variation for your use on Twitter. In general, adding numbers, underscores, or abbreviations can help you come up with a great available username.๏ปฟ

Yes, this is true. They claim to be too busy. Also, the name I am interested in, is three years into no activity. I tried sending a message, but the user of the name isn't getting my offer, either. I guess I am stuck for the time being.

How did you do that? I had to find 25 fans before I could get a vanity URL.

Had you done this research to begin with you wouldn't have had the need to start this thread.

But good luck in getting your desired name.

No, you just click business on the front page, and answer the questions. Eventually they will ask for your personal account information, and you are done. You will control it through your personal account, but it will not show this on information on the business account. No fans needed.

Maybe, I don't understand what you are asking. How would you get fans before you have the page...

That's funny stuff but this "nut", me, has the names I want and I didn't have to take them from anyone ..... Now if you really want to see "unappealing" look at "members" that think they can ask the "experts" to show them how to circumvent a system to take something they want away from someone else.

You say abandonened because it serves your arguement ... Desperation is unappealing :'( .... you might take the kind advice you gave me and relax.

Happy Safe Holidays Everyone

Unfortunately control freaks are getting into this industry.
Don't worry the people in it who are doing this for years like myself will stand up to this.

Kyle when you register a trademark You cannot get something that was created before the trademark, any attempt at this will result in the trademark being taken away under bad faith laws.
You can try steal this name by all means tough I doubt it was inactive for as long as you claim since you provide no link to it.You can't get a anyone convicted of anything without evidence so proof this to us or we won't believe you.
Twitter closed up the system for awhile because they are trying to get rid off people trying to get names for their own good and not for personal use so even when it does re-open you won't get it that way.
If your not going to pay for it,your not going to get it.
So face up to the facts if you want it you have to pay for it,cash talks.
That 'slug'/'nut' you refer to they're the clever one, they protect their kids names from people who just want to clog money for themselves and steal good names for decent people.
Oh by the way please rephrase it to proper English. You don't need it,You want it.

The attitude of some in here is a complete turnoff. For your information, he probably can & will get the name he seeks. Twitter does allow legitimate claims for names to occur. Their own rules contain inactivity clauses. So if you have a name & don't lose it, you do have a chance of losing it.

It has happened where people stockpile usernames just so others can't use them. Thankfully policies are in place to prevent this crap from happening.

I successfully acquired a name from them for a major project which was clearly inactive for over a year with no problems & without having to pay a penny for it. I am not paying for a name taken in bad faith. Good luck on your acquisition.

But this chap offers no proof of inactivity.
If they really didn't use it for 3 years then someone who wants it for personal use or someone who owns a trademark from back before then deserves to have it.
Just not someone who wants to get a good name for their own selfish use.
My attitude is a turn-off for you because you got caught out by it.
Twitter isn't for advertising,its for micro-blogging.
So for your information, read those policies again.

No offense but he or anyone for that matter does not have to show proof on here as to inactivity.

Also for your information, Twitter is not just for micro blogging for personal use. If it was just for that, they would not have a Twitter Business section now would they.

Plus who are you to judge who is worth of a user name & who is not. Maybe you should be rereading their policies.

It is complete BS that people hoard usernames with no intention of using them anytime within a reasonable matter. One does not have to tweet everyday or even every week.

However if someone is going 6+ months without logging in, tweeting, etc... they have no business keeping a name as it is a complete waste.
