Somebody wrote me an email about CloningExperiment.com and I replied back to them. The person seems intrested in the name, and wants me to name an asking price. What do you think I can ask for with this name?

I know I shouldn't be making assumptions, but I've been scammed in a similar scenario. Is this person a software consultant?

If the title at their "company" is 'Ph. D. President' then it's definately a scam.

It was also Ph. D. President, so I quess it is a scam. How does this scam work?

Basically, the scammer convinces you he wants to buy your domain. He will eventually ask you to buy an appraisal for (about) $54 so he can see how much the domain is worth. He truly has no intention of buying the domain and you get scammed out of $54.

Check the Warning & Alerts forum for more information. There are tons of threads pertaining to this 'Appraisal Scam.'

Usually anyone that's serious will make a low offer first, and then wait for your counter offer.
If anyone ever asks you to name a price, then answer their question with another question, like "What's your budget?"
If that doesn't work, then tell them you only make counter-offers.

hmm, you could just tell an offer, and if he wants an appraisal first, say him he should get an appraisal, on his costs. :)

I guarantee he'll say these exact words in response to that:

You ask for serious money and I need a proof. I don't want to risk and will not proceed without a professional valuation.

I understand you, but usually sellers provide buyers with appraisals.

Fish is right, this scam has been going around for years. I remember getting similar emails back when I started this in '99.

Well, then just say you wont sell it if you need to pay for the appraisal, sinths its not necessary for you! Ask him why to bother bout couple of bucks if its such a great domain...

Or say you will take of 50$ of your price on the end, if he got an appraisal of his costs

This is definetly a scam. if he mention AllForDomains.com and provied a link to a discussion forum...etc..

Write back to him as harsh / nasty as you want. report it as a scam.

I had this experience. but i found abt that scam before paying for apprisal. i still have those emails. I reported to all credit card companies about that company.

what i figured out is....
It is basically the ppl who own AllforDomains.com. they come as a buyer. then make you buy appraisal from them. if you find that it was a scam, then the buyer replies saying that her is trying to destroy AllforDomains.com...because they charge high price for appraisals. If you write to the company contacts, they say that it is a group of spammers spoiling their reputation.

He'll say this in response to that:

You can always use this appraisal to promote your name or sell it to
somebody else. But what will I do with the appraisal certificate if you
decide to sell your name to another buyer?
