Been getting emails from someone in UK offering to buy my domain name for a client. Went as far as saying client will not stop bugging him until he gets and answer. I keep thinking it was spam or scam. Never answered him for weeks. Now he calls and left a message on the phone. I answered one of his emails and said I would reluctantly sell but his offer was to low. He replied that he would get with his client and get back.

This came out of the blue I never advetised selling. He wants to use escrow.com to finalize.

Is this scam stuff common or may be legite?
It is a consulting company out of UK seems OK from what I saw.

If he wants want to use escrow.com than it seems legit to me. Make sure you finally do use the escrow service when you're ready to sell the name after negotiations. Good luck with the sale.

Your problem might just be making sure your not under selling it.

Would be funny if you wrote back "I will not stop bugging you until you pay me 20k"

It is a pretty generic saying.

I have had it for years people have wanted it before and I always turned them down. I thought don't even accept his first offer. 5000is not really worth it to me. I use the email and storage. Changing all my banks creit card etc. email addresses alone is a headache. I don't want to get greedy and blow it but I have no idea what a moreless generic name could go for. I imagine it is like most things, just depends.

That's perfectly understandable, wanting to be cautious, as you are.

Would it be possible to post the domain below? It'd be easier to give advice on if we knew the domain.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like it is not an outright scam.

It's probably not a scam. So if you are going to sell, make sure you get a price that makes it worthwhile for you.

If you have not been in the domaining biz, you might not know your domain's real value and end up selling too low.

What I'm saying: your potential buyer seems a little too anxious to pay 5,000 (I assume dollars or euros), which suggests that he or she is trying to get your domain cheap.

It would do you well to do a little hunting, looking for comparable sales.

If your domain is a fairly common one-word generic term in .com, then $5,000 would definitely be too cheap. Of course, a lot depends on the metrics. Go to Google Adword Keyword Tool (GAKT) and look for the EXACT (in brackets []) global search for your term. That won't tell you the value, but it will give you an idea how much your term has been searched in the last month.

If the numbers are low (under 1,000) but competition high, it may still be worth a lot. Remember that you want to search for the EXACT term because the numbers may be wildly different for broad (no quotes or parenthesis), "", and [].

Just do careful research before accepting that offer.

Update.......This morning I woke up and there was an email from this guy stating his client was not unreasonable and jumped the offer to 7000.00 and they pay the escrow fees. Sounds OK to me, but I do not know how to transfer a domain to anyone. I have never used escrow.com and I am worried about them doing a catch all and getting all my email. Can someone PM me a phone number and help ease some fears.

Thanks

Congrats on the pending sale! Escrow.com is a legit site that has been used for countless domain sales over the years. I personally have never heard of a time where the seller was ripped off using Escrow.com.

If you have the name parked at a company like Sedo they will handle the transfer of the domain for a commission charge, if it's something you're not comfortable doing.

Good luck Reggie!

Did you PM the name to anyone here to ask about a value?
It seems you're not a domainer but rather a site developer... and it seems you don't have a solid idea of the value of your name, that you're jumping on 7K because it 'seems like a great offer'. The way they're negotiating with you, and that sudden 2K jump in price, tells me they are lowballing you. Sounds like a very canny buyer who realizes they have a non-domainer on the hook and can grab the name for a steal compared to its actual value.

What if you sell it, and then find out from domainers your name was easily worth 50K? 200K? - 110,000 exact monthly searches for your term is a tremendous amount, more than many many great dictionary words, and if it indeed receives 110,000 exact (rather than 'broad') monthly searches, I can almost guaran-damn-tee you it is worth more than 7K.

For gosh' sakes, PM a long-term member here the name and ask about it before you commit to selling at 7K. For your own financial sake, find the value of your name and stop guessing; make an educated decision; what if you are throwing away a six figure domain? At least find out beforehand, rather than slapping your forehead and going 'D'oh!' later on. :)

Welcome to the forum

I asked him to PM me the name but he hasn't - to be honest I'm sceptic of the whole offer until an experienced domainer looks at it.

Edit: How has he come to own a domain with 110k exact match?!

Hi,
I asked for a phone number so I could call someone. I will admit I am a sheep amongst wolves so to say and I am even leary of posting the domain to the world. I own it beacause I have had it for about eight years. We wanted it for a business name and about fell over when we found it was available. So I jumped. I may be doing it wrong but I put the words in quotes and got 110,000 a month low comp. I put them in brackets and got the same.

---------- Post added at 07:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:41 AM ----------

I also put it in a site and it said the value was 20.00

You should put it in Google Adwords keyword tool and tick the Exact box ONLY in between Broad & Phrase.

Ok-I will give an example. Let's see if we get the same figures. :tu: You can repeat this process with your domain name.

For this example, we will use one from my signature: Autoz.org :D

Step 1
We visit this page: https://adwords.google.com/o/Target...&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS

Step 2
In the Word and Phrase section, type: Autoz
We are dropping the extension, so .Org is not typed.

Leave Website and Category blank.

Below those you can see Advance Options and Filters. Click on it.

By Locations and languages, choose United States.

By Language, choose All Languages.
By Show Ideas and Statistics for, the default is desktop and laptop devices. That's cool as it is.

Step 3

Before you fill in the captcha, look at the pane of the left, and scroll up until you see Match Types. Broad is ticked by default. Now, tick [Exact]

Now you can fill in the captcha and search.

You should get Global monthly searches of 27100, and for exact, [autoz] 9900.

By step 2, if the domain name was 3dlovesautoz.org, we would type 3d loves autoz (with spaces).

By step 2, you don't have to choose United States, you can choose United Kingdom.

Let us know how it goes this time around.
