Hello Guys,

I'm new to domaining but not new to IM and such online, based on what I read thus far including what some very kind members have told me via PMs and responses to my introduction thread, I have written some things down and also included some bits based on how I normally research things such as trends. I'm posting this for two reasons:

1. To get some feedback from the older users in regards to what they think, and possibly get some more suggestions along the way.
2. It might help out some newbies that just signed up (like myself) too.

The Plan Of Sorts

- I like to use buzzsumo to find trending subjects for my business from time to time, I mostly read up about the future techy and entertainment stuff. I feel this could be a pretty good source to touch in on trending subjects in order to snap up domains.

- Google trends (same as above mostly).

- Someone mentioned about (geographical ) which I feel is a good angle. Here is what I was told:
Target the 300 largest cities in USA. Example: MiamiDogTraining.com or MiamiDinnerCruise.com.
Fantastic advice from someone that has been around the block many times.

- I found a thread on here last night and the guy wrote:
Follow sales that are in the sub $1000 range because this is where you
will, realistically, be at with your own attempts to sell something
IMO it makes a lot of sense actually, I'm never one to run before I can walk anyhow.

- I have around 355.391 USD to invest right now into buying some domains, it's not much I know but it's a start and I hope to use it smartly.

Questions

- Do you think my basic starter plan is aright.

- Is 355.391 USD enough to get started.

- Do you guys ever get worried about the renewal of your domains, by that I mean come next year you have XYZ domains to renew which can obviously add up to a lot of money.

- Where would you suggest to buy domains from mostly, I tend to use Godaddy and NameCheap. I want to make sure I'm not missing a trick though, the only one thing that frightens me guys is staying on top of how much I'll have to spend when renewing.

I hope at the time of having to renew there will be discounts kicking around for any of my purchased domains. I use a Google extension called (Honey) it tracks discounts (hope that helps someone as it's pretty awesome).

Thanks for reading! :)

...the tool I use is called SECockPit ...

I just had a quick look at their website
Since you're using it. Could you tell me what the differences are from LongTailPro and MarketSamurai? (I own both)
If I have understood correctly they all do roughly the same thing, correct?

Correct, pretty much the same things only I hate the LTP, just seemed buggy and slow to me really. The MS these days is a little slow and clunky too, the SECockPit is fast and works on the web browser not your computer, EVERYTHING is under ONE hood too! :)

Generally I don't just rely on tools though as I'm sure you don't either, last month I went against my own rules and found a keyword, it looked awesome the SEO competition was super low (at that time), I made the mistake of not checking on Google "etc..." to see how many competing pages and so on. The next day the compo had changed and was super high, all red no green so had to start over again.

Wow, ok thanks I'm starting to understand this now. Tell me.. if I were to purchase EMD domains (non expired) and just park them doing what you do, do you think that would work well and generate traffic. I mean if they are getting natural search engine traffic theoretically many searches should come from people looking into the domain for that keyword as well. I could be talking shit I'm not sure, but I'm certainly starting to grasp it a bit more now anyway thanks guys,

Pure gold guys nice one! :)

search engine results or results from google keyword tool, DO NOT equal "actual traffic", that a domain conceive from those terms, will receive.

so, when searching emd's, first, they must make sense, they cannot be backwards terms, have additional prefixes or suffixes, or be plural when they shouldn't.

if you read thru appraisal section, you see quite a few examples like that.

imo....

You're pretty much correct about LTP but MS is ok. I mean, the guys sent me the software for free due to some beta testing I did a couple of years ago and it has been a really strong asset (at least for my abilities).

You're right though, numbers and tools mean little when it comes to real use if there is no common sense involved

Yeah don't get me wrong the MS still comes in handy for second opinion analysis for me when digging into the SEO competition, however, overall when actually implementing the keyword research itself I love the SECockPit functionality and how it operates all under one roof. You can create folders and place your results into different categories accordingly and more.

The best way to make a small fortune in domaining is to jump right in with a large fortune to spend.

Speaking as an older guy, 52, sold my first name in 2000...

Yes, geographical can be a good angle. For one thing it narrows your potential market, making advertising easier. My best name-only sales were for London names.

That being said, I don't think anyone can come along, fifteen years after the dotcom boom, invest a few hundred bucks and expect to make money. Much more likely you will lose that money, for the simple reason that there aren't many valuable names sitting waiting for you to come along and register them.

One thing I would say, dotcoms have been done to death but I think there is potential for getting some nice names with the new generic domains.

I have made much more money from developing sites than selling names and as you own the twentieth most popular forum in the world, it surprises me greatly that you don't just stick with that but instead come here with a mere $300 to invest. You don't add up, mate.

Yes its a big conspiracy I'm really the FBI, you caught me its a front, damn. I said my forum is the 20th in its (niche). The niche is pretty big but NOT out of all the forums online (obviously).

Just because I own the forum does not make me rich either. Sorry pal but your seriously way off on this one.

Moving on... Yes, I have around that figure right now because I'm literally moving house, like, waiting for the removals now and as explained my money is not endless I have a wife and bills to think of.

I agree about the other types of domains, thanks, yes I can see the .Com is super saturated and such, I'll still likely look out for trends and try my luck from time to time, besides that I'll invest into any good expired .Coms and try my luck.

Just a thought... Try not to judge people and be so paranoid because you're going to put people off this great forum, personally I've got thick skin and deal with many issues on a daily basis so its not a problem with me.

Just my two cents anyway, besides that thanks for the feedback.

Someone has been sending me some PM's, been a great help actually, as many have on here. Yes, I'm not dismissing a mentor that's for sure. Thanks for responding too.

Beg your pardon. When you said "it's inside the top 20 biggest forums online in it's niche" I must have just noticed "top 20 biggest forums online".

Sorry for the confusion. Good luck to you.
