Very broad topics, but am glad to share some of my mistakes/ insights w/ you.
1) First off, you are doing a good thing hanging out here. I have owned names for over 2 years, going w/ my own instincts, and just recently started coming to forums and thus far, this has been the best one of the lot. In my functional art/ lighting design work, i initially benefitted from not being in direct contact w/ what others were doing, because it allowed me to develop a unique style and develop some innovations. This MO hasn't worked (at least for me) w/ domain names.
2) :talk: Scour the posts for info, links to resources, and see what is selling, how successful sales are being marketed, and what names are being appraised at. If I had done this early on, I wouldn't have registered some of the names I now have. senor.us? polka.us? californiacongressman.us?

3) That being said, maintain a degree of independence and don't be overly swayed by the opinions of others. The experts are not always right. :notme:
4)Start in an area that has subject matter that you are familiar with and attempt to resist going after names dealing w/ info you are just learning to work w/. "Attempt" is a key word here, because if you are like me, that is the best you will be able to do.

5)Similarly, try avoiding names that are connected to a hot, personal immediate issue that you are close to. I recently lost my system to a virus. This, combined w/ the MS Security Update attack, the Blaster Worm, SoBig etc. led me on a buying spree of Security and Privacy themed names because I was sure this would be a hot ticket. After receiving a luke warm reception.:bah:

:hehe::p : to my little "gems", I realized my thinking had been somewhat unbalanced, so I went out and looked for more that were better- 1/2 LOL.
And finally, spend a couple of days or at least sleep on your new name(s), before spending money. This also applies to potential "offers" and DN services.
Now, if I could just consistently follow my own advice! Good luck and
