Hello Guys,

I'm new to domaining but not new to IM and such online, based on what I read thus far including what some very kind members have told me via PMs and responses to my introduction thread, I have written some things down and also included some bits based on how I normally research things such as trends. I'm posting this for two reasons:

1. To get some feedback from the older users in regards to what they think, and possibly get some more suggestions along the way.
2. It might help out some newbies that just signed up (like myself) too.

The Plan Of Sorts

- I like to use buzzsumo to find trending subjects for my business from time to time, I mostly read up about the future techy and entertainment stuff. I feel this could be a pretty good source to touch in on trending subjects in order to snap up domains.

- Google trends (same as above mostly).

- Someone mentioned about (geographical ) which I feel is a good angle. Here is what I was told:
Target the 300 largest cities in USA. Example: MiamiDogTraining.com or MiamiDinnerCruise.com.
Fantastic advice from someone that has been around the block many times.

- I found a thread on here last night and the guy wrote:
Follow sales that are in the sub $1000 range because this is where you
will, realistically, be at with your own attempts to sell something
IMO it makes a lot of sense actually, I'm never one to run before I can walk anyhow.

- I have around 355.391 USD to invest right now into buying some domains, it's not much I know but it's a start and I hope to use it smartly.

Questions

- Do you think my basic starter plan is aright.

- Is 355.391 USD enough to get started.

- Do you guys ever get worried about the renewal of your domains, by that I mean come next year you have XYZ domains to renew which can obviously add up to a lot of money.

- Where would you suggest to buy domains from mostly, I tend to use Godaddy and NameCheap. I want to make sure I'm not missing a trick though, the only one thing that frightens me guys is staying on top of how much I'll have to spend when renewing.

I hope at the time of having to renew there will be discounts kicking around for any of my purchased domains. I use a Google extension called (Honey) it tracks discounts (hope that helps someone as it's pretty awesome).

Thanks for reading! :)

If you actually have 355.391 USD, and on the off chance that you are serious:

for the love of god, do not spend 350K USD on something you do not know about :-/

What you wrote about seems sound, do some research, get a FEW domains, try to make some sales.

$355.39 or $355,391.00?? Big difference!

Let me answer your questions.
Question 1
1. The type of domains you are planning to snap are not easy to get. Of course you can have some trending domains but you might face problem in selling the same. Long keyword domains are usually taken for development/parking purpose and not for domaining. Fortunately if you find users they might not pay that high.
2. You can start with money you have. I suggest you go for liquid domains like LLLL, NNNNN com domains. You can sell this types of domain easily and any time you want. With the money you have you cannot hope to buy plenty of good domains but surely you can buy 2/3 quality domains.
3. Renewal is always pain, especially if you don't make good sales. Personally, I prefer to transfer the domain from one registrar to another to reduced the renewal fees. There are of of course some coupons. Look for them at the time of renewing.
4. Godaddy, Namecheap, Enom and Name.com are equally good. Godaddy is safe but renewal fees is a bit higher. When it is time to renew I would transfer the domain from Godaddy to Name.com and vice versa. This strategy will cost half of the renewal fees.
These are my personal views. Hope this will help.

Don't worry I never run before I can walk, check my introduction thread. And thanks yes smaller domains would be what I'd opt for I would never waste all my money into one domain, ever. ;)

I was in a rush and simply used a money converter, I then copied and pasted it into the thread. Not quite sure why you even brought that up all.

Let me answer your questions.

Hello Sam,

Thanks for your detailed response it's highly appreciated. Below I have included what you wrote and responded to them:

1. The type of domains you are planning to snap are not easy to get. Of course you can have some trending domains but you might face problem in selling the same. Long keyword domains are usually taken for development/parking purpose and not for domaining. Fortunately if you find users they might not pay that high.
- Ok, that makes a lot of sense thank you I have noted this now.

2. You can start with money you have. I suggest you go for liquid domains like LLLL, NNNNN com domains. You can sell this types of domain easily and any time you want. With the money you have you cannot hope to buy plenty of good domains but surely you can buy 2/3 quality domains.
- I looked into those types of domains but could never get my head around why anyone would buy them, I guess I've been obsessing over finding the EMD golden nugget domains with decent monthly searches. From what I'm reading on thus far it would seem these shorter domains are the way to go however, thanks.

3. Renewal is always pain, especially if you don't make good sales. Personally, I prefer to transfer the domain from one registrar to another to reduced the renewal fees. There are of of course some coupons. Look for them at the time of renewing.
- Ah, very clever I did not even think about that, nice one I'll do that then for sure. :)

4. Godaddy, Namecheap, Enom and Name.com are equally good. Godaddy is safe but renewal fees is a bit higher. When it is time to renew I would transfer the domain from Godaddy to Name.com and vice versa. This strategy will cost half of the renewal fees.

- Great, yes that's helped thank you Sam.

PS

Sam, what are your views on .XYZ domains at this time.

I recently got a $350 graphics card.

With $355.39, I can buy one
With $355,391 I can buy a thousand

that's why he probably brought that up

Fair enough, I thought there was some trolling behind the comment. Sorry, I'm not used to HQ forums these days as you mostly get trolled to shit on them. I see now and thanks for pointing that out, sorry if I came over as being rude that was not my intention.

I am not an expert yet, so I cannot answer all your questions. But IMHO even a $100 - $150 budget is enough to get started in domaining if you use it smartly (I started with $150).

Cheers, I'm mostly struggling at grasping what is worth investing in and what is not.

Stick to .com (At beginning, it's a must)
Try to buy business related .com (keywords that have value and searches)
Don't buy trademarked and typo domains.
Do proper research before buying domain.

I wanted to ask something else if you don't mind... I'm in no rush whatsoever to sell domains. I own a business online and just don't need to rush into getting any ROI's. Do any of you just park your domains and let people come to you from a holder page rather than sell them via marketplaces.

Yeah most will say stick to the .com market, but that market is "the market" since at least 20 years. You need a lot of creativity and skills to find your space.
Focus on trends:
ex: apparently the chinese are still investing in domains,
.xyz is the keyword in domaining this month, probably it won't be next month.
City shortnames, NY(LL).com or LL(NY).COM are a safe bet if you find a cheap ones, ...

It is all about finding the new trends at the first moments... If you are the last, you lose your investment.

Gotcha, yeah thanks for that I love looking for trends actually I must admit. I like looking at buzzsumo each day via the tech section mostly. Thanks for the response it's appreciated.

Domain parking is a different ball game altogether. The bitter truth is that not every domain can earn through parking. Expired domains with traffic or strongly targeted keyword domains can help. Further you have to keep CPC in mind while buying domains for parking purpose. Some keyword earn as little as .01 while others $5 per click or even $100. Hope this helps.

Thanks yes that does help nice one. I'm pretty advanced at keyword research so I'm able to find some decent keywords with low-medium SEO competition, the tool I use is called SECockPit and it shows me when a .com/.net is available so EMD purchases for keywords with some decent searches and low'ish competition can be achieved. It also shows you how much the CPC is as well I believe. I do like the idea of trend domain purchases as well now too. :)

Do any of you just park your domains and let people come to you from a holder page rather than sell them via marketplaces.

i do.
letting potential buyers come to you, affords the seller greatest leverage in negotiations.

i started with a creditcard having a $500 limit

i buy names and park them at > sedo, domainsponsor, domainnamesales, fabulous, parkingcrew, afternic
many of these places also have "seller" options, where you can receive and negotiate offers on your names, while earning income from traffic your names may deliver.

briefly, there are two types of domainers:

investors and flippers

flippers, typically make the lowest roi, because they have to keep selling to sustain, in the game.

investors, often achieve the highest returns, because they can afford to 'wait' for the right buyer.

many 'investor types' have put themselves in a such a position, by acquiring revenue producing names that "pay for themselves" (renewal fees).while being held.

a flipper, acquires names in hopes of a quick sale, to build capital.

imo....

Wow, ok thanks I'm starting to understand this now. Tell me.. if I were to purchase EMD domains (non expired) and just park them doing what you do, do you think that would work well and generate traffic. I mean if they are getting natural search engine traffic theoretically many searches should come from people looking into the domain for that keyword as well. I could be talking shit I'm not sure, but I'm certainly starting to grasp it a bit more now anyway thanks guys,

Pure gold guys nice one! :)
