i saw a posting in domains wanted thread, in response to the OP's request.


the member posted his name, along with an estibot appraisal.

the appraisal value is "LOWER" than his asking price.

so, if i'm the buyer, why would i even consider paying MORE than what estibot has apppraised the name for?

not that estibot's values mean anything to me personally....i just don't see the rationalization for using it....especially when you obviously don't know how to apply it in an advertisement.

Doesn't make much sense to quote Estibot unless it appraises it for a number greater than you're selling it for...

I've seen some experienced domainers quote it when selling domains -- I guess you could call it a "sales tactic". Personally, I feel that's pretty much borderline scamming when you know better than to trust the automated appraisal but quote it anyway because it reports a favorable number.

If you need an estibot guesstimate to pitch your domains, are they so good in the first place... I doubt.
I mean only the noobs would base their purchase decisions on estibot figures anyway

could be treated as estibot as the low end value and the owner's price as high end value, estibot does approximations and not the over-all tool it needs to be combined with owner's decision as well.

Meh.

It would depend on the context, :imho:

If someone uses Estibot to show that their 3 character.com appraises at $1,700 to show it is in the $x,xxx for some reason, and then asks $2,100 - no harm, no foul - just using estibot to legitimize the price range requested.

If, however, the appraisal is $5 and then they ask $900, well, that would be rather incongruous.

I am not sure that using estibot in your sales thread is a stupid move. I personally use it a lot now when checking a domain. What would be cool? Is whenever a domain was posted in sales thread...links were auto created for estibot, whois, archive.org, google PR, and SE links. A tag like [domain]witza.com[/domain] could spark the whole thing.

If I see someone using Estibot to justify their price, I will simply go elsewhere. If you need a 3rd party automated system to help justify your sales price, your name is not worth my time.

Estibot likes to overprice.
BTW another quite good free appraisal is dnscoop.com but it multiplies some base price with backlinks (yahoo bl checker which count any text in sites, not links).

This way, statcounter.com has 435,000,000$ which is quite funny when they appraise google.com for 1,184,000,000$ :D

I don't think there is any harm in putting the estibot stats into a sales thread for informational purposes. Just leave out the valuation!

I like to use estibot for the overture/wordtracker/linkbacks/PR and to see which other TLD's are taken. The appraisal piece I couldn't care less about but these other numbers do help.

Add on archive.org and I would love it even more.

Sorry, but I've seen Estibot appraise at under what a domain is worth, especially when it doesn't detect the keywords properly and you don't capitalize them. People seem to think Estibot valuations are ALWAYS way over the true value, and they aren't... sometimes it is way low.

Anyway, basing the price off the Estibot valuation is silly, whether it is above or below it.

Should just bow-out, but really, do we care what people put in their ads/forum postings? I do not.

Anything folks post in for-sale ads is a bonus as far as I am concerned, even if it is an appraisal whose validity might be questionable, since if you understand the metrics that go into those automated appraisals it may bring your attention to an aspect of a domain you would have otherwise missed, no?

Just seems like a non-issue to me; we've all been "new" and we've all done silly things at one point or another, and if posting an estibot appraisal in a for-sale ad is the dumbest thing I do today I will count myself among the very fortunate.
