I have owned this domain name for over twenty years. We originally purchased it to use as a general purpose "guide" site to many subjects. Kind of like an about.com site. Smart Guide to sailing, Smart Guide to Cooking, Smart Guide to etc... That sort of thing. We have many domains and are doing some house cleaning and have decided to sell it. Any feedback or info as to what you think it's worth, would be appreciated.
Thanks

It's certainly a very usable domain. Very versatile in these days of GPS based travel apps etc. That said the 'Smart' word does get over-used quite a bit and I do think buyers (and app users) have become a little bit Under-awed by its repeated use. I'm not forgetting its potential many other uses in the 'Guide book' market but travel is the one that comes instantly to mind.

It is the sort of domain that I would expect to see in Rons DNjournal weekly sales report in the Secondary .com sales section, These are usually sales at around the $4,000 to $5,000 range. But who knows.

If it was mine I would have it listed at all the major sales platforms for around *$6k to 8k,(plus commission charges) I would expect it would be seeing around 200+ visits a month (just for a sales lander) and hopefully one of them would be a buyer.

It is one of these names that I would certainly explore any current use in all the other extensions - just to see if I had a very obvious outlet in current use, Travel or otherwise.

* Everything I've said above is just off the top-of-my-head. So I would certainly be doing all the 'exploration work before committing to an advertised price.

I like this name. It's a lot better than 99% of the ๐Ÿ’ฉposted here in the appraisal section... ๐Ÿ™„

It's a nice generic, but is it too generic? Let's just look at the data...

Smart prefix has a massive amount of sales in the last 5 years. One of the best prefixes out there.
Guide suffix has less, but still a ton of sales in the last 5 years.
Looks like its registered in about 40 TLDs but not a ton of overall matches. It's still a lot though for a two word phrase.
GoDaddy appraises it at $14K so it definitely has some juice.

"Smart" stuff I think is only trending up. It really pops around the holiday season.

If this were my name, I think a $25K-50K asking price would be very fair. It might take you years to sell it at that amount, but that's what I think it's worth to the end user. You can probably ask for more ($50K+) but you have to be willing to hold out longer.

If you want to sell it to another investor then $3-5K would probably get you a quick sale.

The only advice I can give at this point is to just add a way to get in touch with you on the page. "For inquiries please email [email protected]" or something. I don't think this is the type of name where I'd put a blatant "for sale" page

It depends on if you are looking for a quick sale or are you willing to wait.

Barman thinks as I do...quick sale (for me) would go no less than 5.000. My asking price at full retail would be 55k (probably would take 45 if there is another name I wanted to grab). Use a free lander like Epik offers and simply put a 'make offer' button and see what comes in...be sure to put a token min offer in to keep the $100 goofballs away.

Here under domain names that have been sold that contain the word guide:

outdoorguide com $ 160,000
casino guide com $ 75,000
consumersguide com $ 66,750
golfcoursesguide com $ 62,500

As barman has said the GoDaddy appraisal is 14K. What I have noticed is that the domain names are sold 5-10x of this appraisal. I think the right enduser will pay between $ 100.000-150.000

Having owned this domain for over 20 years, what's the level of interest / offers you've received regarding prospective buyers?

Thank you everybody for your feedback. I have sold a few other domains names in the past to a company that came looking for them. So I am new to the domain selling market. I always thought it was a great domain name and it is very encouraging to see that there is some value to it. Since I have had it for so long, I'm not looking for a fire sale, but I also don't need to wait for the blue sky offer.

What is Epik? Is that a domain marketplace site?

I have received inquiries in the past, but mostly lowball offers. I thought I had legitimate offer several years ago, but something happened to the buyer and it didn't work out.

Yes...epik.com (edit/add) it is a domain registrar as well

There are many threads here where they post...an account is free and they have a marketplace you can list names for sale for free...if you sell thru them it is 9% commission.

It's a good name! As someone else said, far better than most we see on the appraisal board.

Not much more to add than what's already been said.

Great name.

Retail $25k to $77k

Wholesale $1900 to $4k

Smart names sell very well especially a combination that has significant TLD demand and makes sense as a brand. They are very hard to acquire as a reseller so if you do have one hold it close and don't let it go for less than 5 figs. I know I won't on mine

Is it best to outreach to potential buyers or is there a good place to market it?

List it on all marketplaces and stick it in a make offer only lander with DAN.com then link that to Google analytics to check for type in traffic.

I'm going to disagree with most of the appraisals on this page.

Here's my take on your domains value:

Namepros - $220 (7 days)
Auction - $2,200 (30 days)
Investor - $4,400 (3yrs)
End User - $11,000 (7yrs)
Unicorn* - $110,000 (luck)

*Unicorn sales only happen one in a hundred thousand times, but they are possible.

Note: All figures assume that you do your marketing and negotiation optimally, and there is also luck involved of course.

My gut reaction is you should be happy with 20k. It's a great name, but the fact that smartguides.com is available for $3,700 on GoDaddy doesn't help it. Obviously the plural usually has less value, but I'm not so sure it's as much the case with this domain name.

Also, this is a great name for development of a "top 10 best" list type site which I'm very familiar with. I think if you developed it and saw some traction in the SERPS the price goes up really fast. Definitely a situation where you can (and should IMO) spend money to make money.

If I could get names like this for $220 on NP I'd be make at least $xxx, xxx per year in sales.

The reality is names with this much TLD demand( 40+ TLDs taken) and vertical potential are impossible to get from other domainers below $xxxx.

I think it would be so great if he could report to us once the domain sold, who he sold to/where and for how much.

PS: in my valuation Namepros means Namepros auction.

Even in a namepros auction lol. It's not possible.
