use that money to buy some quality related links. traffic has nothing to do with Google PR.

I think traffic is more important than links, though if you use quality links they should help you to get more visitors

Traffic has no bearing on the google PR.

I agree with them, traffic will not get you any PR...PR is acquired by getting backlinks from high PR sites...

so am i understanding correct.... if traffic is not matter, and if i have a brand new site, which has no visiters and if i have made some backlinks, that gives me a some guaranteed pr? than next logical question will be: how many backlinks each pr gets?
say pr 1 is equal to x amount of backlinks?
pr 2 is equal to xx amount of backlinks?
what would be that amount for say pr5 ?
I know i am asking strange question, i just need to show the answer to my boss. Thanks.

Only Google knows the exact amount and there are other factors which effect PR in general for PR4 you need more than 1000 back links. you can reach PR3 with few High PR back links like few PR5 back links.

as bluearrow is alluding to, there is more to backlinks than just the sheer number. backlinks coming from a higher pr page is valued differently than backlink from a page with lower pr. in addition, backlinks from relevant pages are also treated differently than backlinks from irrelevant websites.

so for example, a banking website might benefit more from a pr2 backlink from a credit card page, than a pr3 backlink from a page about hippos. and of course the actual formula is kept secret and is very complex, but these are some factors to consider too when it comes to search engine optimization.

to answer your original question, my gut tells me that traffic does play a role in pagerank, but it must be a very small role. my gut says that it doesn't play any role whatsoever unless you are getting some serious traffic.

PR and traffic are two completely different things. Traffic will have no effect on your PR, and you could conceivably have a PR10 page with no traffic.

Realistically, a site with a high PR is going to have a lot of links to it, which leads to traffic.

You would be better off to disable the PR button on your Google toolbar, and go about building traffic for your website. Traffic = $$. PR = an artificial ranking scheme that is a portion of how one search engine ranks your website.

i so appretiate all of your answers. there is one more question. PLEASE. i just really dont get it.
let say i have generic domain (keyword1+keyword2.com), which i just registered 3 days ago (it is brand new, never been registered before). i put site on it, it got listed in google and showing up No 3 when you search for keyword1 keyword2 from 2 mln results. Sure my site has not traffic or Pr. No 2 is showing up Pr5 site, No 1 is Pr 4. Where is a logic? Why pr 4 goes before pr5 ? and why i got that quick that high?

this just goes to show that pr does not play a critical role in serps. i don't consider it a true form of search engine optimization, but more of a tie-breaker kind of factor. if pr really mattered that much for serps, then nasa, google, adobe, etc, would always show up on at least the 3rd page of any search term, which would be terrible.

First, the answer for your boss is simple: PR is useless, senseless, meaningless and does your boss no good whatsoever. The whole PR hype is overrated and assuming your boss is interested in making money, forget you ever heard of PR.

How Google (and other search engines) determine search results depends on thousands of factors: keyword density, keyword placement, keyword relativity, back links, internal links, domain name, domain age, anchor text, page title, etc etc. Did I forget Pagerank? No. Your ranking does not depend on Pagerank. Pagerank depends on all the other factors.

The steps you should be taking is:
1. Optimize your website for the above mentioned and all other factors. That's what SEO is. A good place to start reading about SEO is the book "Search optimization for dummies", no offense :hehe:
2. When your website is optimized, has interesting and fresh content and appeals to visitors your traffic will start to grow.
3. When your website gets noticed people will start linking to it, bookmarknig it and telling others about it which again will increase traffic.
4. The fresh content, relevant keywords (that you optimized for) and growing amount of links will help your website rise in search ranks.
5. Your PR will rise because Google sees your website as relevant because of points 1, 2, 3 and 4.

So: Put effort into building a good website -> traffic grows -> Your PR goes up showing that Google "likes" your website

NOT: Build PR -> traffic grows -> Have a good website with no effort

AND NOT: Buy traffic -> PR magically appears -> You have a crappy website with a bunch of fake traffic.

Buying traffic or buying PR is like buying a trophy for a race you didn't win.

Hope that helps.

Traffic has nothing to do with PR. That will only bring you a higher ranking in Alexa. Use that money and submit to some directories and get some PR backlinks. Good Luck. :)
