Well today is the day .XYZ is officially released and open to the public and oh my oh my, some names literally in my shopping cart and removed the instant I proceed to checkout; I have a feeling this extension will overtake all the other extensions and surely be in the top 5 for new tld's if not #1 imo.

ok this is getting a little weird; of course registry has a few issues at launch. Some of my domains were refunded stating Domain was found in a restricted status! Oh boy, just got another one for another domain.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you don't lost your best ones! I only wanted 5 .xyz's, got 2. The other 3 were already taken (I preregistered all of them). As almost always, someone else got the best ... Nevertheless, I'm satisfied with what I got.

BTW, I also had some trouble: couldn't update name servers at first, but this is fixed now.

For me it was not so much about .xyz itself, but about an opportunity - or the first time of not having sh*t on the left side of the dot. :D It's only a small investment for me, and having only good keywords this time (which I could never afford to buy in any of the established extensions), I'm optimistic that I will at least not lose my money. But as I said: Time will tell ...

I didn't have much money to invest, so I registered these four based on a little general knowledge, Google's keyword tool, search results, advertisements and common knowledge.

It required about two hours of research and I have been up way too long at this point.

Inflating the figures is easy, some registrars have actually registered and reserved all the NNN domains in the zone for example. In .xxx half of the domains are reserved but not resolving. Some may be paid reservations or TM registrations, some may just be reserved by the registry and inflating the domain count.

Can somebody explain in layman terms what's so great about .xyz, how is it better than .abc for example.

Pretty simple really. There is not a .abc extension currently.
