I am new to this but my goal is to make a profit at this,a few days ago a name I wanted was available at reg. price but I wasnt totally sure it would turn a profit but I was pretty sure(maybe I should say that my "partner" wasnt sure)so I hesitated on getting it ,so today I decide to go for it and it was gone. For the future should I just trust my instincts or check the market first?

There is no clear rule, "instincts" can be anything from true precognition (unlikely) to having seen the word the day before yesterday in a newspaper.

Narrow the possibilities to the few that have the best chances, based on objective criteria, then pick the one(s) that you are most comfortable with. And learn as much as you can by reading here at Namepros and elsewhere before you spend your money.

By the way, you may have triggered a "tasting" robot by checking availabilty of the name. This means that someone could have bought it to test traffic. If this is what happened you may be able to buy it in five days.

...sometimes you just have to move and do it.....but....beware that late night princess which in the morning has transformed into a frog!

Here is the conundrum. Should you register names you have a "gut" feeling about? Well.... that depends on how good your gut is.

My philosophy is, do it, and do it fast. Someone will beat you to it. This happens constantly. You can also use a register like GoDaddy who will allow you to cancel the domain name within 5 days for a refund, this way its almost no risk if you register it and then say "what was I thinking!"

The more you learn, the better your "gut" will get at determining what has potential for value... People call me crazy sometimes, but I manage to reg a few winners here and there.

You can only find out if you try.

He who hesitates ........well we all know the rest.

If you are going to make it in any endevore you have to trust your intsincts. You only learn from making mistakes or listening to what mistakes others have made.listen read and then take action.

Thanks for all the great replies ,well now I have another dillema that is aggitating me ,I was on godaddy and tried to reg. a domain ,put it all the way through cart but I had to call support because there was a problem with my paypal account so he used my debit card and it went through ,(the whole time from the beggining he was wowed that the name was available) then he told me that there was an error and finally that It was allready regestered and he had to refund my money,,, I feel cheated ,he had no real answer for why this happened ,has this ever happened to anyone else, and what do you think the problem was?

Goddady whois inaccurate. Anything that seems to good to be true to be available, is not. Use Domainsite.com whois, much more accurate.

You should look up the whois to see when it was regged.

Hi,

If you do not register straightaway on GoDaddy, names often get picked up fast by Maltuzi holdings to be tasted for traffic. I know this from experience.

Check the whois - if they are the registrant, wait a few days and try to register the name again. If the name has no traffic it will get dropped. Definitely do not type the name into your browser!

Matt.

back on the original topic:

When it comes to investments of any kind, I believe its good to watch the market for a few months prior to making your first move. Domains are much cheaper than stock portfolios, for the most part, so your potential loss wouldn't be as great. I think its a good rule of thumb, though.

Don't put your partner under too much stress. The financial returns may not be worth it.

Godaddy lets you drop names within 5 days of registration? Is that with any domain extention or a limited few? Any fees they charge you link ICANN $0.25?
