I got this from snapnames last year and forgot to transfere it to a reasonable registrar , and now its time to renew.

So what do you think should I renew houstonmechanic.com

Let me know what you think.

The renewal fees are $35 which is ridiculous and why I dont use snap anymore.

Contact Snap's tech support and negotiate for a cheaper renewal (else, say, you'll drop the name). Remember that even if they agree to let you renew for $10, they're still making money.

KEEP!

You have a gold mine niche here.

If you can, transfer NOW to a more reasonable registrar.

If not, suck it up: renew it and then transfer ASAP.

If you're not going to develop yourself, pay someone knowledgeable (in SEO) to develop a mini-site. You could also set up a quick directory and reviews of Houston mechanics and maybe even set up a small forum for Houston residents to rave and rave about their mechanics. Of course, this should have ads.

If you're not going to develop at all, I think you could sell this easily for a good profit to an end user.

IMHO. :$: in your pocket.

:hi:

The domain does not expire until February 15 so what is the problem?

SnapNames or any other Registrar cannot block a transfer out.

ICANN Policy: Domain transfers cannot be blocked based on
the number of days remaining.

You can transfer out even if the domain is expired and before Redemption.

The only allowable instances a Registrar can block a domain transfer is if it's within the FIRST 60 days after initial registration or for a period of 60 days after an incoming transfer.

I'd renew and transfer it to another registrar if I were you. :]

At $35/year you're roughly breaking even on a domain like that. AdWords Keyword Tool only reports about 16 searches/month for "houston mechanic", so I'd hardly call that domain a gold mine.

There are better buys out there. I just snatched Safety / Rails / com for $60 and those keywords receive 1600 exact searches per month.

HoustonMechanic.com, however, WOULD be a keeper for $10. Call SN and negotiate.

Actually, my keyword tool (straight from Google) shows a search volume of 4,400 per month for Houston Mechanic.

You're looking at fuzzy matches. Change the match type to 'exact' and you're looking at just 28-36 matches for "houston mechanic" as an exact phrase.

Even if you compute domain resale value based solely on this figure (Google AdWords Keyword Tool > Exact matches), you'll actually be accurate at least 80% of the time.

Okay, I see what you say, JoshuaPZ; you are absolutely right.

Houston, having become the fourth largest city in the U.S.A., and air conditioned cars being the most viable means of transport around town (Mid and/or Downtown), the demand for mechanics must rival that of leather boots. Still 35 dollars well spent!

Yes, keep it but transfer it to a cheaper registrar.

GeoService.com domains are very easy sales from my experience.

I never understood why they orefer to keep such expensive reg. fee. I guess to move at some other reg is a good decision

tHANKS ALL I am going to hold the name for now and see if I can get a lower rate.

If I owned it I would probably drop it only because there are much stronger domains out there to be had and I don't like weakness in a domain portfolio.

There is almost no domain in existence with an Approximate Average Search Volume of 36, at the G Keyword Tool, that I would ever own.

Remember.....that is 36 people in the United States per month at Google. There will be significantly less on HoustonMechanic, com. There are probably one to four direct navigation type of uniques a month, right?

Now is that worth it to you? It is not to me.....IMHO.

I think it's an ok name and would probably re-register it.

Be great for a mechanic in houston :imho:

Dave......that is all fine and great if you can sell it....if that is what you are into, or develop it......if that is what you are into. But.......if you are going to park it......don't count on making back your reg fee. It might one day several years down the line.....like five to ten years when systems are more advanced, more advertisers, etc......but right now that domain would be a "dog domain" for parking.

The big problem with domains like these if you don't follow the first two options is that if you end up getting tons of them then in a year's time here come renewals and none have "earned their keep", so to speak.

Now if you have 1,000 of these that is about $9,000. That is 1,000 liabilities not 1,000 income-producing assets.

Bottom line, if you don't follow one of first two methods and only buy and park these type of domains , you will find yourself in quicksand in short order. :)

Oh yes I do agree that for parking and earning $... forget it

Also may be hard to get much for it if not to an end user. Not sure how many backyard mechanics are looking for a good donain name but I'm sure there out there.

But if you are indeed a mechanic in houston then I believe displaying the name on the side of your automobile would get you some customers simply because it's pretty easy to remember.

Believe it or not I actually saw a guy in a truck the other day that was advertising his services and his url was his birth name in the .net extension with a hyphen in it. I have no idea what it was and am pretty certain he gets very few visitors because of the name alone. No one can remember it.

This name on the other hand, assuming you live in Houston - once you see it you can remember it. So this name would be great for an end user in my opinion.

Maybe not that great for a domainer but may make a good blog answering folks questions. Like I said, I'd probably renew it.

I have several domains at snapnames, and my renewals are around $7.50...wonder why you are paying $35?
