UPDATES

- 1 man shot on JETWAY, not inside plane, as an update confirms.

- Marshall shot a man after telling him to STOP pulling a suspicious item out of his carry on bag - he threatened to have a BOMB in his carry on, he did not stop, the Marshall shot him.

- Man killed by shot, just after he was running and pushing through the crowd to get on the plane illegally.

- No bomb was found upon investigation... hmm..

- Man suffered from Bi-polar mental illness and did not take his medicine.

(EDIT: Title typo, nobody named "Fred" was shot)

Anybody else find it creepy that this happens on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor attacks? (USA)

-Matt

Thanks for bringing us the news. I instantly checked CNN (European) but only the Sport News was on. :td: Maybe a little later.

You have got to be pretty mentally ill to threaten a bomb in a US airport since 9/11. Not sure if shooting to kill was necessary, but shit happens I suppose.

In this case you've got to shoot to kill. You cannot take the chance and this person apparently reached for a bag. It's also apparent that they tried to take control of the situation several times and it could not be done. The lives of everyone on the plane are worth far more than a single life and you cannot risk those few precious split seconds that could be the difference between only a single death or the possible death of everyone on board. I'm glad to see that the Air Marshall acted quickly and took control of the situation.

It's unfortunate if the guy was just mentally ill, but the air marshall doesn't have the possibility of getting a psychoanalysis of the guy. All he knows is that the guy said he had a bomb and reached into the bag to perhaps trigger it. As far as I'm concerned, he had no choice in the matter, as the result could have been devastating if true. It's his job to make sure that things don't happen and if you threaten that they will, even if you don't mean it, it's the risk that you take, whether you understand that risk or not.

Okay, so if it was a real bomb he would have killed many people - then would you say that killing him wasn't necessary?

You have to think about the people who were there and made the option.

You don't think a trained US Air Marshall is capable off shooting out legs? I don't question whether or not he should have shot him, I just question if his intentions were to kill the man...if so...was it really necessary to kill him and not just stop him. You get shot in the leg, I guarantee you stop running...if not for good, at least long enough for the Air Marshall's to dog pile your ass.

Crap

Shoot out his legs and he triggers the bomb. The marshall would either be dead along with countless others, or look like a pile of dog poo because he didn't shoot to kill as he is trained to do.

A good message here. Don't bring bombs, don't pretend to bring bombs or you will be shot dead.

Well done the air marshall for handling a difficult situation.

End of story.

I heard on the news that he was reaching in the bag that he said carried the bomb. If that is true, do you think not having any legs will keep him from pressing a trigger? ;)

He'll trigger the bomb huh? wow you are giving this a lot of "what if's". What if the fire marshall missed and accidently shot a 12 year old boy, who had an extremely high IQ and would have one day developed the cure for AIDS and ended world hunger and brought peace on earth. What if that happened?

 @ Ending World Hunder and bringing peace on Earth (Although that would be very nice, it will never happen).

Not trying to get anyone mad, but just saying that it was 1 life instead of 50+. If someone else tries to do it (Yes, it's another "IF"), and the officers don't shoot and the person triggers the bomb and killing 50+ people, are you still going to say they shouldn't have shot the guy? I hope not...

Again, not trying to get anyone mad, but come on...

Good job IMO, shouldn't have said he had a bomb.

The marshall did what he was trained to do - better than risking 200 people's lives...

If the person has a bomb that they must trigger and they know that they will be blowing themselves up in the process then I truly doubt they'll be worried about a simple shot to the leg. It takes a fraction of a second to hit a button and so the air marshall has to make his decision in far less time.

And the "what if" scenario doesn't really hold much ground. These are highly trained individuals and not Fred and Joe who were pulled off the streets a week ago to do the job. Once again, will you not agree that the life of everyone on the plane is worth more than the life of a single person? It would be a tragedy if such an event did happen indeed, but these guys are trained so that it doesn't.

The value of the lives of all those passengers is greater than the value of the one threatening and almost insane person... CrazyTech hit it on the marl... remember 9-11?

You can not shoot to wound like in holywood...something like this happened after the london 7/7 terrorist attacks where a man was shot, and they said how they must shoot to kill or risk many lives!

Its a right thing to do, besides its sacrificing one person compare to 200 people who will be in danger on that plane.

i NEVER said they shouldn't have shot him. I just made a simple statement saying whether or not they should have shot to kill. I don't truly give an eff whether they did or not...I was just wondreing if the Marshall's intent was to kill. And from watching the morning news shows this morning...I'm not alone in my question of was the proper force taken?

Yes of course 500+ lives are more important then 1 whacked out pill popper. I'm not questioning that either. Some of you sure have a way of making assumptions on people's statements. Some of you have valid arguements. Some of you just like to see yourself type. ;)
