SEDO buying domains??

Strange.. I sold one of my .eu domains I had parked with SEDO after the normal negotiation activity, you know the offer, the counter offer ect. Then followed the normal messages like waiting for buyer to deposit the funds into escrow and waiting for transfers to be started etc. I know from previous experience this can take a while and after about 8 weeks I duly received my payment. I always like to check the Whois data of my sold domains to see who the new owner is and boy was I surprised to see that the domain is now registered to SEDO and in the name of the SEDO representitive who handled the negotioations and who sent me messages when I complained that the buyer was taking too long with his transfer request and that I would prefer to cancel the sale if the buyer did not get a move on and so on.
Very odd as when I received the EURID e-mail for approving the transfer the name of the buyer was some german guy with a totally different name then my SEDO contact in who's name the domain is now registered.

Sedo bought at least one name from me last year. Obviously they are smart enough to know the market and since they get a commission sales they save even more money than a buyer. All this stuff is shady imho with no regulation or transparency.

Sometimes if the buyer has paid yet cannot be found for the transfer Sedo will take ownership of the domain.

Domcollect is the 'public' face of the company related to Sedo that conducts domain purchases.

Sedo have changed their transfer process in recent months , They now take control of the domain before transferring it to the buyer , the whois contact usually displays sedo escrow service , before they transfer the domain to the buyer

They may also have the advantage of knowing what you would sell for (if the domain has previously had offers on it).

I would think they would take advantage of any bargains going when they can.

interesting...."DomCollect Worldwide Intellectual Property AG was established in 2005 with a view to acquire and monetize qualitative premium and generic domain names.

With a portfolio of a few hundred thousand domains, we have a visitor volume of more than a million of highly qualitative visitors per month available. We are in the market to enlarge our domain portfolio with premium domains and domain portfolios".

I did'nt know that :)

Sedo, acting as a brokerage, cannot buy a customer's domain without informing the customer of the potential conflict of interest. It's certainly that way in the US with real property (real estate, etc.). If Sedo has done this, it needs to come to light.

As long as they are up front about it ... no problem. Just can't serve as broker while hiding behind invisible platform and acting as the buyer.

"a few hundred thousand domains"

No big deal... just a few hundred thousands...

Just 1 million+ visitors a month?? For such an amount of domains, it isn't much.

I think it is probably temporary whilst they wait to find the buyer. I notice that the contact e-mail address is [email protected]

Yeah, thats what it will be, sometimes they can take weeks and weeks to transfer it to the new owner.

I don't think we would know. I'm just pointing out general business ethics (and law in US speaking of real property, which domains are not) would require Sedo not act as both broker and buyer at same time without divulging it to the seller.
