Dear *******:

In the continued effort to maintain a successful and secure marketplace, Sedo recently initiated a Buyer Certification program. Your account has automatically been updated to a certified buyer account as we have successfully completed a transaction in the past. New customers must certify their accounts before submitting offers. There are three methods available for new customers become certified buyers: including credit card verification, signed Buyer Certification Statement, Completed W9 form (available to member in the US and Canada) or through an SMS certification code.

You will see an additional tab in the “My Sedo” navigation menu for the Buyer Certification page. Again, no action is required from you as you are already a certified buyer. We hope that you are pleased with this improvement which was designed to allow us to maintain a secure marketplace where transactions are carried out smoothly and efficiently.

We appreciate your business and as always if you have any questions please feel free to contact us at [email protected] .

Best Regards,

Your Sedo Team
At last! :bingo:

I did get this email this afternoon and it took me only 2 minutes to get verified. I used the SMS option and that was very easy to use.

I think this is a big step in the right direction.

I'm also not sure what value has a SMS verification.

I can buy a phone simcard from any store for $5, using it to authenticate at Sedo and then I can throw it away.

I can't see where is the added value, what exactly does this certify?

Agreed, they are being given away for free here.

However, how many people can really be bothered to order a new sim card just to submit a fake offer?

I've still had no offers on any premium domains of mine since this buyer certification. A little angry.

I actually think the red tape is going to put off serious buyers as well.
My transactions with Sedo have always been smooth, of course some people here have experienced non-paying bidders. Many times the offer will not turn into a transaction because they buyers don't agree with / cannot afford your asking price. It does not mean they weren't serious.
Of course there is still whois but anonymity is an esssential tool in negociations. I just hope Sedo is not shooting itself in the foot.

Still no offers on my domains, I'm a little disgusted with this. Maybe now it is time to move away from Sedo and put up my own custom for sale pages?

This is how it should work:

1) Buyer signs up and submits offer without the buyer certification.

2) Seller agrees to the offer.

3) The domain is still open to offers, but now buyer has 7 days to certify himself/herself.

4) Once buyer certifies himself/herself, the domain is closed to offers, transaction begins. If buyer does not cerify himself/herself within 7 days of the accepted offer, the offer is no longer valid and domain still is open for offers.

That's how it should work. The buyer should certify himself/herself right before the transaction begins, not before the offers. First off, not everyone is comfortable giving out tax info to Sedo. We are because we know who they are, but a regular joe shmoe never heard of Sedo, and that hurts things.
