I tried to see for myself if their appraisals are so bad as
everyone says, but actually I had a lot of fun reading it!

I've submitted this domain: broadband.it

This is an english word but it is widely used here in Italy,
there are big companies (Tiscali, Tele2 etc...) advertising
in Google Italy for this keyword.

Starting:
"The domain name broadband.it is not very suitable due to
its exotic ending".

I didn't know Italy is so exotic... I was thinking it is one
of the top ten economies and markets in the world... but
maybe it's just me. I prefer to think that exotic is a very
nice place like Bahamas or Maldives... (I wish be there to
take sun near the sea with one very cold gin tonic) :p

Sedo is an European company and they should know that
the above domain is suited for the Italian market, here in
Italy people first type the .it ext. and then the others.

But this is the best part:
"Comparable transactions... these domain names were
chosen because they share characteristics with
broadband.it: (I've omitted the prices)

- domain.li (how many people live in Liechtenstein?)
- golf.li (and how many play golf there???)
- casino.pn (very related to my keyword, by the
way, what is .pn?)
- hostels.fr (this is related because I read somewhere
that many major European ISPs will sell their assets
to jump in the hostels biz!) ;)

I think they have some software that takes our money
and send out a $19 priced useless .pdf file! I'm sure
no real person was involved in creating this appraisal,
I hope...

I'm sure that if I had submitted for appraisal broadband.tk
the appraisal would be the same :)

But hey, .tk is very exotic!!!

What did they settle on for price?

Might not be my opinion (?!) but some people think Sedo is a huge waste of time and money. I enquired as to whether they may like to feature one of my domains in their Top Names section.

I was told that in order to be considered, my name would have to be parked with them (and not just for sale with them) and have been through one of their appriasals at $XX. Oh and it would help me to pay for the Featured Listing section if I wanted to be considered.

Shall I just throw money at them!!!!!

I will not disclose the price, anyway I can tell you that
it is definitely wrong as I've received some offers up to
300% of the sedo estimate

This was why I've asked to have the name appraised, I was
hoping to have it marketed in the Top names section. But I
guess they prefer the "take the money and run" approach,
better 20 bucks without work than higher commission for
a good sale. The even didn't bothered to check if the name
was listed for sale in their site.

Passini,

I have to agree with you on this one. For one of my names they came up with a price by comparing my domain to recent domain sales that were completely irrelevant to my domain.

My domain isnโ€™t actually for sale but I bought an appraisal due to the high number of unsolicited offers I received. The highest offer I have received was 1000% more than their appraised price......need I say more.

Funny thing is most complaints I've heard about sedo's appraisals were that they were too high. Interesting to hear you feel the appraisal was too low.

Sometime ago I paid $50 to sedo to do an offer on a domain for me. This included one of their appraisals which was mid $xx,xxx. That made me laugh. I have no way of knowing but they informed me that no reply was received to my low $x,xxx offer.

I ended up finding the owner & bought for very low $x,xxx.

So I always thought their appraisals were very high.

Hm..I've always thought Sedo puts things too high instead of too low
I don't get the "exotic" meaning too...

Unless it is a .com, .de, or .co.uk Sedo have very little idea what they are doing, their brokers send your good names to the same old list of top reseller/ traffic buyers in most cases, I doubt, and I may stand corrected , that they actually actively pursue "real" end users.

I only ever used them once , they appraised a name at $4K which I sold for $15k ( I only got the appraisal because they said it would help them sell it- they did not! Now I know better)

You are more likely to get a better appraisal by asking some of the more "professional domainers" here on the forum, and it would be free :!:

Yes they say like this but they don't take 10 seconds to check if the name is
in THEIR website and send out the pre filled form: "we suggest to list the name on sedo..." :td:
