With all the different search engines, which ones should I be optimizing for, and which are searched the most often?

You should be optimizing it for google if you want to optimize it for search engines.

But I would rather focus on optimizing it for users. The rest will take care of itself.

optimize for google first. off the top of my head i'd say that they have ~75% of the u.s. search market share, and while you're optimizing for them specifically, you're probably doing alright for the other search engines too.

yep, first make website user friendly like: attractive website design, unique and informative content, proper site navigation, etc....

And, then focus on optimizing for Search Engine by applying various link building tactics.

I am already trying to get more people to discuss and enlighten themselves on the SEO side. Closing threads will put them off [discourage]

Google is top among search engines. But I can say that to get good rankings in Yahoo would rather easier than Google.

IMHO, may be Google is a good choice. But it depends~
